World Marathon Major
The World Marathon Majors (WMM) (known for sponsorship reasons as the Abbott World Marathon Majors) is a championship-style competition for marathon runners that started in 2006. A points-based competition founded on six major marathon races recognised as the most high-profile on the calendar, the series comprises annual races for the cities of Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York. In addition, each edition of the series recognises and includes the results of the major global championship marathon held in that year, usually on a one-off lapped course. These races are the biennial World Athletics Championships Marathon, and the quadrennial Olympic Games Marathon. Marathon
The marathon is a long-distance foot race with a distance of , usually run as a road race, but the distance can be covered on trail routes. The marathon can be completed by running or with a run/walk strategy. There are also wheelchair divisions. More than 800 marathons are held throughout the world each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes, as larger marathons can have tens of thousands of participants. The marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896. The distance did not become standardized until 1921. The distance is also included in the World Athletics Championships, which began in 1983. It is the only running road race included in both championship competitions (walking races on the roads are also contested in both). The 2007 New York City Marathon was the 38th running of the annual marathon race in New York City, United States, which took place on Sunday, November 4. The men's elite race was won by Kenya's Martin Lel in a time of 2:09:04 hours while the women's race was won by Great Britain's Paula Radcliffe in 2:23:09. In the wheelchair races, Australia's Kurt Fearnley (1:33:58) and Switzerland's Edith Hunkeler (1:52:38) won the men's and women's divisions, respectively. The 2007 Chicago Marathon was the 30th running of the annual marathon race in Chicago, United States and was held on October 7. The elite men's race was won by Kenya's Patrick Ivuti in a time of 2:11:11 hours and the women's race was won by Ethiopia's Berhane Adere in 2:33:49. Results Men Women Death of Chad Schieber A participant in the 2007 Chicago Marathon, Chad Schieber of Michigan, died suddenly while attempting to finish the race. His death was brought on by complications involving his previous diagnosis of mitral valve prolapse. The race, which had started at 8am, was stopped by 11.30am, with runners calling for emergency help, more than 300 needing picking up by ambulance suffering from nausea, heart palpitations and dizziness from the stifling heat, and 49 requiring hospitalisation. The elite men's race was won by Kenya's Felix Limo in a time of 2:06:39 hours and the women's race was won by Deena Kastor of the United States in 2:19:36.
