World Indoor Bowls Championships
The World Indoor Bowls Championship is an international bowls competition held annual at Potters holiday park in Hopton on Sea. The last week of the competition is televised live on BBC where the open singles and open pairs', women's singles and mixed pairs' finals are shown. History The competition was first held in 1979 in Coatbridge, Scotland as a men's singles only event. The first event was sponsored by Embassy Cigarettes. In 1986, the men's pairs competition was added to the championship. In 1988, a rule change allowed women to compete for the first time and the women's singles competition was created. This rule change also changed expanded the men's singles and pairs competition and both become open tournaments. In 1989, the championships moved to the Guild Hall in Preston, England And Churchill Insurance took over the sponsorship. Jim Baker (bowls)
Jim Baker is a former Northern Irish international lawn and indoor bowler. Bowls career Baker was born in Belfast on 18 February 1958. After finishing runner-up in the 1982 World Indoor Bowls Championship he went one better in 1984 clinching the World Indoor title. Baker was part of the Gold Medal-winning triples for the combined Irish team in the 1984 World Outdoor Bowls Championship and Gold Medal-winning fours in the 1988 World Outdoor Bowls Championship. In the 2004 World Championships he won a third gold medal for the combined Irish team, in the fours with Jonathan Ross, Noel Graham and Neil Booth and a silver medal with Noel Graham in the pairs during the 2004 World Outdoor Bowls Championship. Bob Sutherland
Bob Sutherland (1942-1997) was a former Scottish lawn and indoor bowler. Sutherland was born on 21 May 1942 and was a member of the Bathgate outdoor bowls club and West Lothian indoor bowls club. Sutherland was signed by Glasgow Rangers in 1959 and stayed with them until 1964 before moving to Stirling Albion F.C. A knee injury forced him to retire from football and he started bowling in 1968. He won the Scottish national indoor singles and British isles indoor singles in 1983; this was the same year in which he achieved his greatest success when winning the 1983 World Indoor Bowls Championship. John Watson (bowls)
John Watson is a former Scottish lawn and indoor bowler and was born in Scotland on 22 November 1945. Watson came to prominence in 1975 after winning the Scottish Indoor Junior Singles title. Three years later he defeated Jim Blake in the Scottish National Singles final and then won his first international indoor cap in 1979. David Bryant (bowls)
David John Bryant (27 October 1931 – 27 August 2020) was a three-times World (outdoors) singles bowls champion (in 1966, 1980 and 1988), a three-times World indoors singles champion (in 1979, 1980 and 1981) and a four times Commonwealth Games singles gold medallist. He is generally considered to be the greatest bowler of all time, winning 19 World and Commonwealth gold medals in total.
