Woodsy Owl
Woodsy Owl is a national symbol and advertising character for the United States Forest Service with the aim of motivating children to form healthy, lasting relationships with nature. Harold Bell of Western Publishing (and the producer of the Smokey Bear public service announcements), along with Glen Kovar and Chuck Williams, originally created the mascot in 1970 as part of a United States Forest Service campaign to raise awareness of environmental protection. Woodsy Owl has been an integral part of the educational program of the US Forest Service for decades and is particularly active against littering and environmental pollution. Woodsy's original motto was “Give a hoot! Don't pollute” and has since been updated to “Lend a hand—care for the land!" Harold Bell
Harold Bell (October 5, 1919 – December 4, 2009) was an American marketer and merchandising executive who co-created Woodsy Owl, the Cultural icon, iconic mascot of the United States Forest Service. Bell created Woodsy Owl with two U.S. park rangers, Chuck Williams (park ranger), Chuck Williams and Glenn Kovar, and another colleague, Betty Hite, for the first Earth Day in 1970. Woodsy Owl is best known for the motto, "Give a hoot, don’t pollute!". Biography Early life Harold Bell was born on October 5, 1919, in Union City, New Jersey. He was one of three sons born to his parents, David and Hilda Rosenthal Belsky. His father worked as an embroiderer. Bell served in the United States Navy during World War II.
