Wood (festival)
Wood is an annual small early summer folk and roots music festival and environmental gathering, which takes place in Braziers Park, Ipsden near Wallingford, Oxfordshire, UK. Its independent organisers, Robin and Joe Bennett, also arrange the Truck Festival. Events There are two stages and the acts alternate between the two. The main stage is built of wood, and is solar-powered. The second stage (the Tree Tent) is in a medium-sized circus big-top and runs on bio-diesel. There is now a bicycle-powered disco as well. There are many workshops, including woodcraft, African drumming, jewellery making, thatching, poetry and singing. Performers The first Wood took place in 2008, and performers (primarily playing acoustic instruments) have included Brakes, Dodgy, Karine Polwart, Devon Sproule, King Creosote, Lightspeed Champion and Get Cape. Braziers Park
Braziers Park is a Grade II* country house and estate on the edge of Ipsden - a small village near Wallingford, Oxfordshire, England - housing a secular intentional community and the School of Integrative Social Research. It has also been used as a film location for large- and small-budget films. The house once belonged to Ian Fleming's family, and the room that was once Fleming's nursery is now a library. History Braziers Park was built in the late 17th century (with a datestone of 1688), and modelled in the Strawberry Hill Gothic style of architecture by Daniel Harris on behalf of Isaac George Manley (1755–1837) in 1799. As a teenager, Manley had been a naval officer with Captain Cook on the first voyage of the Endeavour 1768–71; and was later Vice Admiral of the Red, and as commander of captured the French corvette ''Legere'' in 1796. Devon Sproule
Devon Sproule (born 23 April 1982) is a folk and indie rock singer-songwriter and musician based in Charlottesville, Virginia. She shared the ASCAP Foundation Sammy Cahn Award for 2009 with Oren Lavie. She is married to fellow musician, and music producer, Paul Curreri. After birth of their daughter in 2016, Sproule returned to touring with the release of ''The Gold String'' in early 2017. Uiscedwr
Uiscedwr (pronounced "ish-ka-dooer") is a former musical group whose members came from various parts of the British Isles and played British folk music influenced by world music. The group started off as a trio and was originally based in Manchester. Uiscedwr won the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award in 2002. As well as touring and recording, Uiscedwr ran its own label Yukka Records and the members also offered tuition in fiddle, guitar and bodhrán. History Esslemont and Byrne met in Manchester in 2002, and soon afterwards formed the group. Willy Mason (born November 21, 1984) is an American singer-songwriter. Early life Mason was born in White Plains, New York, the son of Jemima James and Michael Mason, both songwriters. Mason is a direct descendant of the 19th-century philosopher William James, the brother of novelist Henry James. When Mason was five, he and his family moved from Tarrytown, New York to West Tisbury, Massachusetts, on the island of Martha's Vineyard. He attended Chilmark Elementary School through 5th grade, West Tisbury Elementary School and Martha's Vineyard Regional High School, where he participated in several local bands such as Keep Thinking, Cultivation, and Slow Leslie. Eliza Carthy
Eliza Amy Forbes Carthy, MBE (born 23 August 1975) is an English folk musician known for both singing and playing the fiddle. She is the daughter of English folk musicians singer/guitarist Martin Carthy and singer Norma Waterson. Life and career Carthy was born in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. She went to school at Fyling Hall School in North Yorkshire. She grew up on a family farm along with her maternal aunt and uncle's families who lived adjacent. At thirteen, Carthy formed the Waterdaughters with her mother, aunt (Lal Waterson) and cousin Marry Waterson. She has subsequently worked with Nancy Kerr, with her parents as Waterson–Carthy, and as part of the "supergroup" Blue Murder, in addition to her own solo work. Thea Eve Gilmore (born 25 November 1979), also known as Afterlight, is an English singer-songwriter. She has released more than twenty albums since her 1998 debut '' Burning Dorothy''. Francis Edward Turner (born 28 December 1981), is an English Punk rock, punk and Folk music, folk singer-songwriter from Meonstoke, Hampshire. He began his career as the vocalist of post-hardcore band Million Dead, then embarked upon a primarily acoustic-based solo career following the band's split in 2005.
