Women's Sumo
is a form of sumo played by women. Professional sumo traditionally forbids women from competition and ceremonies. Women are not allowed to enter or touch the sumo wrestling ring (''dohyō''). Despite this, women sumo wrestlers have existed through history and exist in the present day on an amateur level. History The first recorded instance of women performing sumo, according to the ''Nihon Shoki'', is when Emperor Yuryaku (418–479) summoned two courtesans and ordered them to wear loincloths and to sumo wrestle. Women's sumo would not become common until the 18th century in the middle of Edo period, Edo (1603–1868), when a form of ''onna sumo'' was performed in some areas of Japan. Maryna Pryshchepa (Ukrainian: Марина Прищепа; born 28 July 1983) is a Ukrainian judoka. Career She competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics (Beijing) in the -78 kg event and lost her opening match to Heide Wollert. Four years later in London, she participated in the -78 kg tournament of the 2012 Summer Olympics and was eliminated in her first match by Audrey Tcheuméo of France. Vera Vyacheslavovna Koval (russian: Вера Вячеславовна Коваль; born 22 October 1983 in Bryansk) is a Russian judoka, who played for the half-middleweight category. Epp Mäe (born 2 April 1992) is an Estonian freestyle wrestler. She won the silver medal in the women's 76 kg event at the 2021 World Wrestling Championships held in Oslo, Norway. Hetal Dave (born 8 December 1987) is India's first and only professional female sumo wrestler. In 2008, she made it into the Limca Book of Records. Julia Dorny (born 20 February 1990), is a German athlete, media scientist, journalist and television presenter who has won various World and European Championships in three martial arts disciplines. She is the only female athlete in the world who has won championships in judo, mixed martial arts and sumo wrestling.
