Wishaw Thistle F.C. was a Scottish football team, from the town of Wishaw in Lanarkshire. The club played in the Scottish Cup and subsidiary League competitions in the 1890s, and came within one vote of joining the Scottish League, but was wound up in 1900. History The first reference to the club is in its fielding a five-a-side team in a competition hosted by Wishaw Swifts F.C. at the start of the 1884–85 season. By the end of the Thistle's first season, it felt strong enough to challenge the senior Swifts, but the latter club - despite "very poor" play - was still able to win 5–0. Junior successes The Thistle was originally a Junior club and won the Lanarkshire Junior Cup competition in 1885–86, 1886–87, and 1887–88, the first of the finals seeing the Thistle hammer Hamilton West End 7–1. Wishaw ( sco, Wishae or Wisha ; gd, Camas Neachdain) is a large town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on the edge of the Clyde Valley, south-east of Glasgow city centre. The Burgh of Wishaw was formed in 1855 within Lanarkshire. it formed a joint large burgh with its neighbour Motherwell from 1920 until its dissolution when Scottish local authorities were restructured in 1975, and was then in Motherwell district within the Strathclyde region until 1996. The Scottish Football Combination was a football league football structure set up in Scotland for clubs outside the Scottish Football League and the reserves (or A sides) of some of the League members. History 1896–1911 The competition was formed on 7 July 1896, by sides from various other competitions, including the Scottish Football Alliance and the Midland League. A handful of reserve clubs also expressed a wish to join, and these were accepted; indeed, the competition was over-subscribed, Hamilton Academical being accepted as members over Albion Rovers by 9 votes to 7, and Third Lanark's A side being preferred to that of Clyde. Motherwell ( sco, Mitherwall, gd, Tobar na Màthar) is a town and former burgh in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, south east of Glasgow. It has a population of around 32,120. Historically in the parish of Dalziel and part of Lanarkshire, Motherwell is the headquarters for North Lanarkshire Council. Dalziel Park is an area located between the villages of Carfin, Cleland, North Lanarkshire, Cleland and Newarthill in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. Other nearby settlements include the large town of Motherwell and the new town of Ravenscraig. The Scottish Football Federation was an association football competition formed in 1891 which ran for just two seasons. The proposal for a competition came from seven clubs (Falkirk, King's Park, Royal Albert, Glasgow Wanderers, Pollokshaws, Kilmarnock Athletic, and Arthurlie) which had been overlooked for the Scottish League and Scottish Football Alliance. Scottish Football Alliance
The Scottish Football Alliance was a football league football structure set up in Scotland in competition with the Scottish Football League. Its success in the early years of professional football in both England and Scotland made Alliance the basis for a second division in both countries. The alliance attracted a number of Junior clubs to the League system to guarantee its longevity for years to come. 1891–97 Originally founded in 1891 to rival the League, the Scottish Alliance was one of a number of leagues set up a year after the Scottish Football League was formed.
