Elmwood is a village in Pierce County, Wisconsin, along the Eau Galle River. The population was 817 at the 2010 census. History A post office called Elmwood has been in operation since 1885. State Trunk Highway 29 (often called Highway 29, STH-29 or WIS 29) is a state highway running east–west across central Wisconsin. It is a major east–west corridor connecting the Twin Cities and the Chippewa Valley with Wausau and Green Bay. A multi-year project to upgrade the corridor to a four-lane freeway or expressway from Elk Mound to Green Bay was completed in 2005. The expansion served to improve safety on the route, which was over capacity as a two-lane road. The remainder of WIS 29 is two-lane surface road or urban multi-lane road. Glenwood City is a city in St. Croix County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,242 at the 2010 census. State Trunk Highway 170 (often called Highway 170, STH-170 or WIS 170) is a state highway in St. Croix and Dunn counties in Wisconsin, United States that runs east–west from Glenwood City to near Colfax. Route description WIS 170 begins at the intersection of 1st street and Oak Street in Glenwood City. 1st Street north and Oak Street west of the intersection are part of WIS 128. The highway runs south along 1st Street until meeting Maple Street, on which it runs east. Interstate 94 (I-94) runs east–west through the western, central, and southeastern portions of the US state of Wisconsin. A total of of I-94 lie in the state. Eau Galle River
The Eau Galle River is a tributary of the Chippewa River in western Wisconsin in the United States. It is about 35 mi (56 km) long. Via the Chippewa River, it is part of the Mississippi River watershed. The Eau Galle River was named ', "river of the gravely/pebbly banks", by French explorers in the late 17th or early 18th century. Over time the spelling of ''galet'' changed to ''galle'', thus causing a 1905 mistake in attribution by Henry Gannett, author of a book on place names in the US, who assumed that the river's name meant "bitter water" in French. There is a persistence of the ''galet'' pronunciation in spite of the spelling change to ''galle''.
