Wisconsin Highway 72
State Trunk Highway 72 (often called Highway 72, STH-72 or WIS 72) is a state highway state highway in Pierce and Dunn counties in Wisconsin, United States. It runs in west central Wisconsin from US Highway 10 (US 10) and US 63 east of Ellsworth east to WIS 25 in Downsville. The road is maintained by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). Route description WIS 72 begins at an intersection with US 10 and US 63 in the Town of Ellsworth in Pierce County, east of the village of the same name. From here, the highway heads east running concurrently with US 63. The roads pass through a rural area together until US 63 splits off to the north. WIS 72 continues eastward, intersecting County Trunk Highway DD (CTH-DD) before entering the Town of El Paso. Ellsworth, Wisconsin
Ellsworth is a village in and the county seat of Pierce County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,348 at the 2020 census. The village is adjacent to the Town of Ellsworth and now incorporates the formerly separate district known as East Ellsworth. The municipality of Ellsworth and its surroundings are slowly becoming incorporated into the Twin Cities Metro Area. History Settlement in the area that now comprises the village of Ellsworth began with the arrival of several families in 1857. The village was officially platted in 1862, then incorporated in 1887. The village was initially called Perry, in honor of the War of 1812 hero, Oliver Hazard Perry, but was renamed in 1866 in honor of Col. Elmer E. Ellsworth, the first Union officer to die in the Civil War. A close friend of Pres. It rises just north of Interstate 94 in St. Croix County near Baldwin and flows generally southwardly through Pierce County. Three small communities are located on the river: Centerville, Martell, and El Paso. While the land near the source is relatively flat, the river soon falls into a steep valley typical of the Driftless Area, with outcrops of sandstone and limestone. Red Cedar River (Wisconsin)
The Red Cedar River in northwestern Wisconsin is a tributary of the Chippewa River. Its name is translation from the Ojibwe ''Miskwaawaakokaan-ziibi'' meaning "Abundant with Red Cedar River." According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the river flows approximately 100 miles from southwestern Sawyer County to its confluence with the Chippewa southeast of Dunnville in southern Dunn County. It drains portions of eight Wisconsin counties: Barron, Chippewa, Dunn, Polk, Rusk, St. Croix, Sawyer, and Washburn. Important tributaries include the Chetek River and the Hay River. Eau Galle River
The Eau Galle River is a tributary of the Chippewa River in western Wisconsin in the United States. It is about 35 mi (56 km) long. Via the Chippewa River, it is part of the Mississippi River watershed. The Eau Galle River was named ', "river of the gravely/pebbly banks", by French explorers in the late 17th or early 18th century. Over time the spelling of ''galet'' changed to ''galle'', thus causing a 1905 mistake in attribution by Henry Gannett, author of a book on place names in the US, who assumed that the river's name meant "bitter water" in French. There is a persistence of the ''galet'' pronunciation in spite of the spelling change to ''galle''.
