Winston Western 500
The Winston Western 500 was an annual NASCAR Winston Cup race held at Riverside International Raceway in Riverside, California, United States, in January, and then in later years, November. From 1963 to 1981, the race was held in January and was the season opening race. NASCAR elected to start its season with the Daytona 500 beginning in 1982, so a second Winston Western 500 was run in November to accommodate the change; the change resulted in Riverside hosting three Winston Cup races in 1981. The race ran in November from 1981 to 1987, serving as the Winston Cup Series' final race of the year from 1981 to 1986. The race distance was 500 miles until 1977 when it was shortened to 311 miles (500 kilometers). The other race held at Riverside, the Budweiser 400, was held in June. Past winners * 1964: Two-time defending champion Joe Weatherly Joseph Herbert Weatherly (May 29, 1922 – January 19, 1964) was an American stock car racing driver. Weatherly was inducted into the ...

1987 Winston Western 500
The 1987 Winston Western 500 was a NASCAR Winston Cup Series race that was held on November 8, 1987, at Riverside International Raceway in Riverside, California. Rick Hendrick, Irv Hoerr and Tommy Kendall would make their respective debuts in the NASCAR Cup Series while George Follmer, Harry Goularte, Jim Robinson and Glen Steurer would leave the NASCAR Cup Series after this event. This race would turn out to be the final fall race in Riverside history; it eventually closed on July 2, 1989, after the 1988 Budweiser 400. Bob Howard also entered (and at least practiced) his #89 Pennzoil Oldsmobile for this race. However, he had to withdraw from qualifying for this event due to personal reasons. Commercialism had come into the fold during the late-1980s in NASCAR as 11 of the cars on the racing grid were sponsored by recognized national products like Levi Garrett, Coors, Folgers, SKOAL, and Coors. Race report Approximately 18% of this event was held under a caution flag; with each ...

Vel Miletich
Vel ( ta, வேல், lit=Vēl) is a divine javelin or spear associated with Murugan, the Hindu god of war. Significance According to Shaiva tradition, the goddess Parvati presented the Vel to her son Murugan, as an embodiment of her shakti, in order to vanquish the asura Surapadman. According to the Skanda Purana, in the war between Murugan and Surapadman, Murugan used the vel to defeat all the forces of Surapadman. When a complete defeat for Surapadman was imminent, the asura transformed himself into a huge mango tree to evade detection by Murugan. Not fooled by asura's trick, Murugan hurled his vel and split the mango tree into two halves, one becoming a rooster ( ta, சேவல், lit=Cēval), and the other a peacock ( ta, மயில், lit=Mayil). Henceforth, the peacock became his vahana or mount, and the rooster became the emblem on his battle flag. Vel, as a symbol of divinity, is an object of worship in the temples dedicated to Murugan. The annual Thaipusam f ...
