Winston Scott
Winston Elliott Scott (born August 6, 1950) is a retired United States Navy Captain and former NASA astronaut. He served as a mission specialist on STS-72 in 1996 and STS-87 in 1997 logged a total of 24 days, 14 hours and 34 minutes in space, including three spacewalks totaling 19 hours and 26 minutes. Winston was also a naval pilot and flew helicopters and navy planes. Education Scott attended George Washington Carver Senior High School until integration occurred in Dade County Schools, and he entered Coral Gables Senior High School, from which he graduated in 1968. He was a member of the Gables High band, and is remembered as one of the school's best trumpet players. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Florida State University in 1972, and a Master of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1980. Coral Gables Senior High School
Coral Gables Senior High School is a secondary school located at 450 Bird Road in Coral Gables, Florida. Coral Gables SHS opened its doors in 1950; its architectural design reflects a Spanish influence, with open courtyards adorned with water fountains. New buildings have been added to its campus, most recently a three-story building. Coral Gables SHS is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The last review took place in the spring of 2006. The instructional faculty consists of 183 teachers. Helicopter
A helicopter is a type of rotorcraft in which lift and thrust are supplied by horizontally spinning rotors. Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System
The Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System (LAMPS) is the United States Navy's program that develops crewed helicopters to assist the surface fleet in anti-submarine warfare. The purpose of LAMPS is to scout outside the limits of a fleet's radar and sonar range to detect and track enemy submarines or missile-equipped escort ships and feed the real-time data back to their LAMPS mothership. They also have the capability to directly engage enemy targets with depth charges or torpedoes, or indirectly engage the enemy by coordinating fleet assets on site. A Mk II version was planned, but was canceled in favor of the more advanced Mk III. Kaman SH-2 Seasprite
The Kaman SH-2 Seasprite is a ship-based helicopter originally developed and produced by American manufacturer Kaman Aircraft Corporation. It has been typically used as a compact and fast-moving rotorcraft for utility and anti-submarine warfare missions. Development of the Seasprite had been initiated during the late 1950s in response to a request from the United States Navy, calling for a suitably fast and compact naval helicopter for utility missions. An officer candidate school (OCS) is a military school which trains civilians and enlisted personnel in order for them to gain a commission as officers in the armed forces of a country. How OCS is run differs between countries and services. Typically, officer candidates have already attained post-secondary education, and sometimes a bachelor's degree, and undergo a short duration of training (not more than a year) which focuses primarily on military skills and leadership. This is in contrast with a military academy which includes academic instruction leading to a bachelor's degree.
