Winston Academy
Winston Academy is a private college preparatory school in Louisville, Mississippi. It was founded in 1969 as a segregation academy. History When the Federal government enforced school integration, many white parents sought ways to keep their children from attending integrated schools. Winston Academy was founded in 1969 to provide white children a segregated education. In 1969, the Louisville-Winston Educational Foundation voted to establish the school after receiving a report on the "public school situation facing our country". Foundation president David Richardson told a crowd of 300 citizens gathered at the county courthouse that "The only choice open to parents who want their children to continue to receive a high caliber education is to support a private school system in Winston County." Louisville, Mississippi
Louisville (pronounced LEW-iss-vill) is a city in Winston County, Mississippi. The population was 6,631 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Winston County. History Like Winston County, Louisville is named for Louis Winston (1784–1824), a colonel in the militia, a prominent lawyer, and a judge of the Mississippi Supreme Court. In 1863 Union Colonel Benjamin Grierson marched 900 troops through Louisville during his raid through Mississippi. There was no fighting in Winston County. In 1927, a mob of 1,000 white men from Louisville, lynched two African-Americans, Jim and Mark Fox by wrapping them in barbed wire and setting them on fire. Matthew Mitchell (basketball)
Matthew LaMont Mitchell (born December 16, 1970) is an American former college basketball coach, who was most recently head coach for University of Kentucky women's basketball. On November 12, 2020, Mitchell announced his retirement from coaching. Coaching Mitchell became the head coach of UK on April 23, 2007, succeeding former UK coach Mickie DeMoss. Prior to becoming the coach at Kentucky, Mitchell spent two years as the head coach at Morehead State. Mitchell started his coaching career as graduate assistant under Pat Summitt at Tennessee, and he also spent time as an assistant coach at Florida and Kentucky before becoming a head coach. Kim Rosamond (born February 17, 1975) is the head coach of the Tennessee Tech women's basketball team. She was named head coach on March 31, 2016. She was previously an assistant coach for the Vanderbilt Commodores for 9 years and an assistant at Middle Tennessee State University from 2003 to 2005, where she also served one month as interim head coach. Andy Kennedy (born March 13, 1968) is an American college basketball coach who currently serves as the head coach of the UAB Blazers men's basketball team. The Midsouth Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) is a consortium of schools in Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana and Arkansas.
