Windsor Shire Council
The Town of Windsor is a former local government area of Queensland, Australia, located in northern Brisbane. History On 11 February 1887, a portion of the Ithaca Division was proclaimed a municipality to be known as the Shire of Windsor. On 10 February 1904, the shire was proclaimed the Town of Windsor. On 1 October 1925, the town was amalgamated into the City of Brisbane. Windsor Town Council Chambers In the 1860s, local Brisbane tuff stone was extracted from a quarry at Windsor alongside Lutwyche Road. In 1897 the Windsor Shire Council built their Shire Chambers (later Town Chambers) at 356 Lutwyche Road (corner of Palmer Street) (), immediately beside the quarry using stone from the quarry. After the amalgamation into City of Brisbane, the Windsor Town Council Chambers was used as storage and office space by the Brisbane City Council, which undertook a restoration of the building in 1987. William Jolly
William Alfred Jolly CMG (11 September 1881, Spring Hill, Brisbane – 30 May 1955, Windsor, Brisbane) was an Australian politician who was the Mayor of the Town of Windsor from 1918 to 1923, the first Lord Mayor of Brisbane from 1925 to 1931, and a member of the Australian Parliament for the Division of Lilley from 1937 to 1943. Public life In 1914, he began to practice as a public accountant. Upon the establishment of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia Jolly was elected a member of the first Board. He was the director of the National Bank of Australia after it merged with the Queensland National Bank. He was councillor of Kings College at the University of Queensland, a member of the Board for the YMCA and a long-term member of the Brisbane Rotary Club. He was elected an alderman of the Windsor Town Council in 1912, becoming the Mayor between 1918 and 1923. Charles Taylor (24 March 1861 – 27 April 1944) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He was born in Melbourne, Victoria, the son of the George Taylor and his wife Mary Albina (née Holder). After attending the Church of England school in Ballarat he was an agent for a produce firm in Sydney, before running a seed and produce agency in Brisbane. The Queensland Heritage Register is a heritage register, a statutory list of places in Queensland, Australia that are protected by Queensland legislation, the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. It is maintained by the Queensland Heritage Council. As at 5 April 2020 there are 1790 places on the Queensland Heritage Register, including the Story Bridge in Brisbane and the Ross River Meatworks Chimney in Townsville. Criteria For a place to be entered in the register, it must be nominated and then go through a process of assessment. National Trust of Queensland is a membership-based community organisation to "promote the natural, Indigenous and cultural heritage" of Queensland. It was founded in 1963. It is a member of the National Trust of Australia, which federates the eight autonomous National Trusts in each Australian state and territory. The National Trust of Queensland is headquartered at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, 28 Tomewin Street, Currumbin, Queensland on the Gold Coast. All members who manage the organisation do so on a voluntary basis. Windsor is an inner northern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Windsor had a population of 7,013 people. Geography Windsor is located about from the Brisbane central business district. It is largely residential, featuring many old Queenslanders, although there is also considerable retail commercial activity, primarily concentrated along Lutwyche and Newmarket Roads.
