Wincanton Town Football Club is a football club based in Wincanton, Somerset, England. They are currently members of the and play at the Wincanton Sports Ground. The club is affiliated to the Somerset County Football Association. History The club was established in 1890, and originally played at Dancing Lane on West Hill. The club played most of its football in the Yeovil and District League in its early years. In more recent years the club won Division two of the Yeovil league in the 1988–89 campaign. This was followed up by two more years of league success when they won Division one the next season, and were crowned league champions another season later. Sometime after this in the 1990s the club then sold its ground at Dancing Lane to move to its current home at Moor Lane. The club was promoted to Division three of the Somerset County League when they finished as runners-up in the Yeovil league at the end of the 2002–03 campaign. Wincanton
Wincanton ( or ) is a small town and electoral ward in South Somerset, southwest England. The town lies off the A303 road, a main route between London and South West England, and has some light industry. The town and electoral ward has a population of 5,272. History Windmill Hill was the site of a Bronze Age Beaker culture burial, and contemporary artefacts have been found on the Selwood Ridge. Prior to the Norman Conquest Wincanton was frequently the scene of battles between the Britons, Danes and Saxons. During the reign of Edmund Ironside, the English, under his command, defeated the Danes, forcing them to leave England. In the Domesday Book the name of the town was spelled as "Wincaleton", thought to mean "Pleasant town on the Cale". Cockroad Wood Castle, which is now in the parish of Charlton Musgrove, was a motte and bailey castle, probably built after the Norman conquest of England of 1066. The Somerset County Football Association, also known as the Somerset FA, is the governing body of football in the county of Somerset. The association was formed in 1885. History The Somerset County Football Association was formed in 1885. There was a very small number of clubs at that time and no mandatory requirement to be affiliated. It is very different from today where there are in excess of 800 clubs which equates to probably more than 2,000 teams. The first Secretary was a Mr H J Ker Thompson of Burnham-on-Sea who resigned in 1896. At the time there was no appointed Chairman, one would be co-opted on the night of Council Meetings.
