Willie Carrick
William Francis Carrick (26 September 1952 – 28 June 2023) was an Irish association football, footballer who played as a goalkeeper (association football), goalkeeper in the Football League for Luton Town F.C., Luton Town. Playing career Born in Dublin, Ireland, Carrick joined Manchester United F.C., Manchester United in 1967, before signing apprenticeship forms for the club in September 1970. During his time in the youth ranks at Manchester United, Carrick predominantly played as a goalkeeper, however during a game against Bury F.C., Bury 'B' on 27 February 1971, Carrick scored five goals playing as a striker in a 6–0 win. At the end of the 1971–72 Manchester United F.C. season, 1971–72 season, Carrick was released by Manchester United, briefly signing for non-League football, non-league club Chelmsford City F.C., Chelmsford City, making his debut in a 2–2 draw against Stafford Rangers F.C., Stafford Rangers in the Non-League Championship on 12 May 1972. Non-League football describes football leagues played outside the top leagues of a country. Usually, it describes leagues which are not fully professional. The term is primarily used for football in England, where it is specifically used to describe all football played at levels below those of the Premier League (20 clubs) and the three divisions of the English Football League (EFL; 72 clubs). Currently, a non-League team would be any club playing in the National League or below that level. Typically, non-League clubs are either semi-professional or amateur in status, although the majority of clubs in the National League are fully professional, some of which are former EFL clubs who have suffered relegation.
