William Wood-Sims
William Wood Wood-Sims (10 February 1858 – 30 November 1926) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1879 and 1886. Wood-Sims was born at Ironville, Derbyshire as William W Sims, the son of Joseph W Sims a boiler plate roller at an ironworks, and his wife Alice. Sims became a slater, and by 1881 was living with his parents at Alfreton. Later he changed his name to Wood-Sims. He played a game for Derbyshire in 1878 against a 16-man Uppingham team, but his first-class debut was in the 1879 season against Yorkshire in July. He then played one match in the 1880 season and one in the 1882 season before playing a fuller season in 1884. Also in 1884, he played one game for North against South. Ironville
Ironville in Derbyshire, England, was built about 1830 by the Butterley Company as a model village to house its workers. The population of the civil parish was 1,930 at the 2021 Census. It is situated between Riddings and Codnor Park. John Wright and William Jessop had purchased the land adjacent to the Cromford Canal from Lancelot Rolleston of Watnall in 1809. The village was notable for its large gardens, and its rural setting. The Mechanics Institute was built in 1846; schools were provided in 1850 and Christ Church, Ironville, a parish church in 1852. The local authority modernised parts of the village in the late twentieth century. Nearby is Pye Hill and the bend in the Cromford Canal where it turns southward down the Erewash Valley and the junction with its extension to Pinxton. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1884 represents the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for thirteen years. They lost all ten county matches and their only victory was against MCC. Partly in response to this the club created as an offshoot the football club Derby County F.C. in 1884. 1884 cricket season Derbyshire played ten county matches, one against the touring Australians and one against MCC. Ludford Docker was captain for his only season. In a sparse season without any centuries, Frank Sugg was top scorer. William Cropper and Joseph Marlow shared most wickets with 34 each. The season was marked by the arrival of the two Sugg brothers from Yorkshire - Frank and Walter. Frank moved to Lancashire CCC after three years, but Walter had a long career with Derbyshire. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1891 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for twenty years. Derbyshire's matches were not considered to be first class in this season. The club had lost first class status after 1887 and did not regain it until 1894, the year before they joined the County Championship. However many of the players competed for the club earlier or subsequently at first-class level. 1891 season Derbyshire played twelve games, all against sides that they had played in first class matches before 1888 or that joined the County Championship four years later. Sydney Evershed took over the captaincy from Fred Spofforth who made his one last appearance during the year. William Chatterton was top scorer making a century against Yorkshire.
