William Wilby
Major-General William Wilby CB (c.1820 - 15 December 1893) was the General Officer Commanding, Ceylon. Military career Wilby was commissioned as an ensign in the British Army on 27 May 1836. He saw action in the Crimean War and commanded the right wing of his regiment at Gujarat and Sindh during the Indian Rebellion in 1857. He was present at the Battle of Aroghee and at the Battle of Magdala in April 1868 during the British Expedition to Abyssinia and went on to be General Officer Commanding, Ceylon from 1879 to 1882. He afterwards served as colonel of the King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) The King's Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster) was a line infantry regiment of the British Army. Major General (United Kingdom)
Major general (Maj Gen) is a "two-star" rank in the British Army and Royal Marines. The rank was also briefly used by the Royal Air Force for a year and a half, from its creation to August 1919. In the British Army, a major general is the customary rank for the appointment of division commander. In the Royal Marines, the rank of major general is held by the Commandant General. A Major General is senior to a Brigadier but subordinate to lieutenant general. The rank is OF-7 on the NATO rank scale, equivalent to a rear admiral in the Royal Navy or an air vice-marshal in the Royal Air Force and the air forces of many Commonwealth countries. The rank insignia is the star (or 'pip') of the Order of the Bath, over a crossed sword and baton. In terms of orthography, compound ranks were invariably hyphenated, prior to about 1980. Battle Of Aroghee
The Battle of Magdala was the conclusion of the British Expedition to Abyssinia fought in April 1868 between British and Abyssinian forces at Magdala, from the Red Sea coast. The British were led by Robert Napier, while the Abyssinians were led by Emperor Tewodros II. In March 1866 a British envoy had been dispatched to secure the release of a group of missionaries who had first been seized when a letter Tewodros II had sent to Queen Victoria requesting munitions and military experts from the British, delivered by an envoy, Captain Cameron, had gone unanswered. They were released; however Tewodros II changed his mind and sent a force after them and they were returned to the fortress and imprisoned again, along with Captain Cameron. The British won the battle, and, rather than being subjected to capture, Tewodros committed suicide as the fortress was finally seized. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". He did not (as is commonly believed) revive the Order of the Bath, since it had never previously existed as an Order, in the sense of a body of knights who were governed by a set of statutes and whose numbers were replenished when vacancies occurred. William Gordon Cameron
General Sir William Gordon Cameron ( Chinese translated Name: 金馬倫; 16 October 1827 – 2 March 1913) was a British soldier and colonial administrator. Military career William Gordon Cameron was commissioned into the 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot in 1844. He transferred to the Grenadier Guards in 1847. In 1854 he was deployed to the Crimean War and took part in the Battle of Alma. He was appointed Commanding Officer of 3rd Regiment of the British German Legion in 1855. In 1867 he became Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion 4th King's Own Royal Regiment and led the capture of Magdala during the British Expedition to Abyssinia. General William Sankey (died 16 November 1892) was a British Army officer who served as colonel of the King's Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster). Military career Sankey was commissioned as an ensign in the British Army in 1844. He saw action as Deputy Assistant Quartermaster General and then as Assistant Quartermaster General at the Battle of Alma in September 1854, the Battle of Balaclava in October 1854 and the Siege of Sevastopol in Winter 1854 during the Crimean War. The King's Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster) was a line infantry regiment of the British Army. It served under various titles and fought in many wars and conflicts, including both the First and the Second World Wars, from 1680 to 1959.
