William Watt (Australian Politician)
William Alexander Watt (23 November 187113 September 1946) was an Australian politician. He served two terms as Premier of Victoria before entering federal politics in 1914. He then served as a minister in the government of Billy Hughes from 1917 to 1920, including as acting prime minister during World War I, and finally as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1923 to 1926. Early life Watt was born on 23 November 1871 in Barfold, Victoria, a rural locality near Kyneton. He was the youngest of eleven children born to Jane (née Douglas) and James Michie Watt, a farmer. His father was born in Scotland and arrived in Australia in 1843, while his mother was born in Ireland. Watt's father died the year after he was born, and the family subsequently moved to Phillip Island. William Watt (July 14, 1828 – July 5, 1878) was a California Gold Rush mining executive, California State Senator, Regent of the University of California, Director of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad, and owner of the ''Grass Valley Telegraph'', the first newspaper in that town. Personal life Watt was born in Scotland, and spent his early years as a marine engineer. He came to the US when he was 20 and by 1852 was in California. He was a Royal Arch Mason. Career He participated in the California Gold Rush by working and purchasing mines in the Grass Valley area. Watt was superintendent and part owner of the Eureka Mine. He also owned the Massachusetts Mine in Grass Valley and discovered the Derbec Mine (near North Bloomfield). From 1861 until 1863, he served as California State Senator from Nevada County. William Watt (missionary)
William Watt (1843–1926) was a Scottish missionary to the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu). He was ordained as a minister of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Scotland in 1868, and arrived in the New Hebrides the following year. He served on the island of Tanna for more than forty years, retiring to Australia in 1910. Watt operated a printing press on his mission station. William Hogg Watt (1818–1893) was a 19th-century Member of Parliament in the Manawatu region of New Zealand. Wellington Provincial Council Watt was elected to the Wellington Provincial Council at the 1853 New Zealand provincial elections, representing Wanganui and Rangitikei. William Redfern Watt (1813 – 17 October 1894) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was born at Belfast and migrated to New South Wales around 1832, to manage the properties of his uncle William Redfern. Around 1838 he married Mary Grant, with whom he had six children. A pastoralist, he had acquired 70,000 acres in the Lachlan River district by 1859, when he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Carcoar. He remained in the Assembly until his resignation in 1862. William Martin Watt (1889 – 26 May 1954) was a Scottish professional golfer. He won the Scottish Professional Championship in 1912 and tied for 8th place in the 1923 Open Championship. Early life Watt was born in 1889 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. He had four older golfing brothers: Jim, John, Robert and Davie. Golf career Watt enjoyed some success in the Scottish Professional Championship before World War I. He won the championship in 1912, was runner-up in 1908 and 1914 and was third in 1909, 1911 and 1913. His success in 1912 was at Dunbar, where he won by 5 strokes from his brother Davie, winning the first prize of £25. He tied with Robert Thomson in 1908 but lost the 36-hole playoff by 7 strokes.
