William Waters (mayor)
William Reid Waters (died 1881) was Mayor of Nelson, New Zealand from 1 September 1877 to 19 December 1877 and a City Councillor. Private life Waters was a migrant to Nelson where he started a boot and shoe making business in Bridge Street in early 1858. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters Benefit Society, being Treasurer of the Court of Robin Hood for almost 15 years. He was noted as being interested in the welfare of others. Because of this interest, despite ill health, he stood for Council and was elected a Councillor. Political career On 1 September 1877 Edward Everett announced his resignation as Mayor. Reluctantly Waters agreed to be Mayor for the remainder of Everett's term. During Waters' term as Mayor, he oversaw the fund raising in Nelson for the Indian Famine Relief Fund, which was prompted by a telegram from the Lord Mayor of London to the Mayors of New Zealand. William Waters (architect)
William Waters (1843–1917) was an American architect who designed numerous buildings in Wisconsin that eventually were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. He was responsible for designing much of historic Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was also responsible for designing the Wisconsin building for the Columbian Exposition. Waters died in 1917 and is buried at Riverside Cemetery in Oshkosh. After his death, Oshkosh honored him by naming the intersection of Washington Avenue and State Street as the "William Waters Plaza". Billy Waters ( 1778–1823) was a black man who busking, busked in London in the nineteenth century by singing, playing the violin and entertaining theatre goers with his "peculiar antics". He became famous when he appeared as a character in William Thomas Moncrieff's ''Tom and Jerry, or Life in London'' in 1821. Biography Billy Waters became notable as a beggar on the streets of London where he played the violin to entertain theatre-goers in exchange for Halfpenny (British pre-decimal coin), halfpennies. It is said that he was formerly enslaved in Colonial America, America but that he traded his servitude to be a British sailor. His striking image was established by his African ancestry, a naval uniform, his peg leg, his violin and the addition of a feathered hat.
