William W. Happ
William Wolfgang Happ (1919 – 1998) was a physicist, electrical engineer, and pioneer in semiconductors. He was one of the first four recruits by William Shockley to help develop technologies at Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory. Early life William Happ was born in 1919 in a town on the border of Poland and Germany. While still a boy, his father, a German-Jewish lawyer, was disbarred by the Nazi regime. The family attempted to emigrate to the United States but were unsuccessful. William was then sent to live in Italy (ten years later, his family was sent to Auschwitz where they perished). Upon graduating from school in 1938, he purchased a fake passport which allowed him to travel to London, where he began studying engineering. At the outbreak of World War II, Happ attempted to enlist in the British Army, however the draft board told him to remain in school. George Smoot Horsley
George Smoot Horsley (1916 – 1992) was a physicist and pioneer in printed circuitry and semiconductors. He was one of the first four recruits by William Shockley to help develop technologies at Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory. Early life Horsley was born in 1916 in Brigham City, Utah to Mormon parents Golden and Mary Horsley. He served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, originally commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1942 and assigned to field artillery. He attained the rank of First Lieutenant and earned his Aviator Badge to become a pilot in October 1943. He had served as a missionary and in 1945 was named an acting Chaplain aboard a ship bound for North Africa. He served in Africa and Italy. In 1945, near the close of the war, he began taking a course in Algebra with the Armed Forces Institute. Traitorous Eight
The traitorous eight was a group of eight employees who left Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory in 1957 to found Fairchild Semiconductor. William Shockley had in 1956 recruited a group of young Ph.D. graduates with the goal to develop and produce new semiconductor devices. While Shockley had received a Nobel Prize in Physics and was an experienced researcher and teacher, his management of the group was authoritarian and unpopular. This was accentuated by Shockley's research focus not proving fruitful. After the demand for Shockley to be replaced was rebuffed, the eight left to form their own company. Shockley described their leaving as a "betrayal". The eight who left Shockley Semiconductor were Julius Blank, Victor Grinich, Jean Hoerni, Eugene Kleiner, Jay Last, Gordon Moore, Robert Noyce, and Sheldon Roberts.
