William Orpen
Major Sir William Newenham Montague Orpen, (27 November 1878 – 29 September 1931) was an Irish artist who worked mainly in London. Orpen was a fine draughtsman and a popular, commercially successful painter of portraits for the well-to-do in Edwardian society, though many of his most striking paintings are self-portraits. During World War I, he was the most prolific of the official war artists sent by Britain to the Western Front. There he produced drawings and paintings of ordinary soldiers, dead men, and German prisoners of war, as well as portraits of generals and politicians. Most of these works, 138 in all, he donated to the British government; they are now in the collection of the Imperial War Museum. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. New English Art Club
The New English Art Club (NEAC) was founded in London in 1885 as an alternative venue to the Royal Academy. It continues to hold an annual exhibition of paintings and drawings at the Mall Galleries in London, exhibiting works by both members and artists from Britain and abroad whose work has been selected from an annual open submission. History Young English artists returning from studying art in Paris mounted the first exhibition of the New English Art Club in April 1886. Among them were William Laidlay, Thomas Cooper Gotch, Frank Bramley, John Singer Sargent, Philip Wilson Steer, George Clausen and Stanhope Forbes. Another founding member was G. P. Jacomb-Hood. Frederick Brown (artist)
Frederick Brown (14 March 1851, in Chelmsford – 8 January 1941, in Richmond) was a British art teacher and painter. Brown studied from 1868 to 1877 at the National Art Training School, London (later the Royal College of Art). He later studied at the Académie Julian in Paris in the winter of 1886 with William Bouguereau. His work was influenced by Jules Bastien-Lepage. His portrait style was influenced by Whistler. Brown was a founder of the New English Art Club in 1886 and author of its constitution. From 1877 to 1892 he was headmaster of the Westminster School of Art; where his students included Aubrey Beardsley, Henry Tonks, Frederick Pegram and Francis Job Short. Philip Wilson Steer
Philip Wilson Steer (28 December 1860 – 18 March 1942) was a British painter of landscapes, seascapes plus portraits and figure studies. He was also an influential art teacher. His sea and landscape paintings made him a leading figure in the Impressionist movement in Britain but in time he turned to a more traditional English style, clearly influenced by both John Constable and J. M. W. Turner, and spent more time painting in the countryside rather than on the coast. As a painting tutor at the Slade School of Art for many years he influenced generations of young artists. Henry Tonks, Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, FRCS (9 April 1862 – 8 January 1937) was a British surgeon and later draughtsman and painter of figure subjects, chiefly interiors, and a Caricature, caricaturist. Goddard Henry Orpen (8 May 1852 – 15 May 1932) was an Irish historian. He attended The Abbey School, Tipperary and graduated from Trinity College, Dublin. Orpen was the son of Dr. John Herbert Orpen (1805–1888) and Ellen Susanna Gertude Richards (?–1855) and a second cousin of Sir William Orpen. He married his first cousin once removed, Adela Elizabeth Richards, on 18 August 1880. Kathleen Delap (27 January 1910 – 29 October 2004) was an Irish people, Irish activist and feminist. Early life Born Kathleen Hilda Orpen on 27 January 1910 to Charles St George Orpen (1864–1939) and Cerise Maria Darley (d.1950) at home in Lisheens, Carrickmines, County Dublin. Delap was the fourth child and third daughter among five daughters and one son, Arthur. Her parents were well-connected and prosperous Protestant families. The Darley's had owned a brewery in Stillorgan, County Dublin, and were related to the Guinness family. Bea Orpen HRHA (7 March 1913 – 12 July 1980) was an Irish landscape and portrait painter and teacher. She aided in the establishment of the Drogheda Municipal Gallery of Art. Early life and education Beatrice Esther Orpen was born at Lisheens, Carrickmines, County Dublin, on 7 March 1913.
