William O'Connell (politician)
William Bligh Henry O'Connell (26 January 1852 – 4 March 1903) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1888 to 1903, representing the electorate of Musgrave. He was Secretary of Lands in the Philp government from 1899 until his death. O'Connell was born in Brisbane, and was educated in England, returning to Australia at the age of eighteen. He worked for a time at Baramba Station, near Kilkivan, went to work as an aide to his uncle, Administrator of the Government Maurice Charles O'Connell, and worked for the Bank of New South Wales in Bundaberg. He was then inspector of Pacific Islanders and assistant immigration agent for five years, before forming his own grocery, wine and spirit merchant firm at Bundaberg, O'Connell & Co. He was one of the first Bundaberg borough councillors in 1881. Queensland Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). The ''NewsMail'' is an online newspaper based in Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia. It has a wide range of content including domestic and international affairs. The paper has a long, notable history, starting as a family business and more recently becoming part of the regional network of News Corp Australia, the largest Australian newspaper publisher. It shut down its printed edition and became online-only in June 2020. History Thomas White, the founder of NewsMail, first named the newspaper the ''Burnett Argus'' in 1861. In 1869, White moved publishing to Maryborough and changed the name to ''The Maryborough Mail''. In 1872, the publisher moved and renamed the newspaper again to the Mount Perry Mail. The ''Telegraph'' was an evening newspaper published in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was first published on 1 October 1872 and its final edition appeared on 5 February 1988. Toowong Cemetery
Toowong Cemetery is a heritage-listed cemetery on the corner of Frederick Street and Mt Coot-tha Road, Toowong, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was established in 1866 and formally opened in 1875. It is Queensland's largest cemetery and is located on forty-four hectares of land at the corner of Frederick Street and Mount Coot-tha Road approximately four and a half kilometres west of Brisbane. It was previously known as Brisbane General Cemetery. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 31 December 2002. Although still used as a cemetery, it is a popular place for joggers and dog walkers, with its over-hanging fig trees and winding pathways. Thomas McIlwraith
Sir Thomas McIlwraith (17 May 1835 – 17 July 1900) was for many years the dominant figure of colonial politics in Queensland. He was Premier of Queensland from 1879 to 1883, again in 1888, and for a third time in 1893. In common with most politicians of his era, McIlwraith was an influential businessman, who combined his parliamentary career with a prosperous involvement in the pastoral industry. Early life Thomas McIlwraith was born in Ayr, Scotland, in 1835, one of four sons of John McIlwraith, plumber and shipowner, and his wife Janet Hamilton ''née'' Howat. ''The Queenslander'' was the weekly summary and literary edition of the '' Brisbane Courier'', the leading journal in the colony—and later, federal state—of Queensland since the 1850s. ''The Queenslander'' was launched by the Brisbane Newspaper Company in 1866, and discontinued in 1939. History ''The Queenslander'' was first published on 3 February 1866 in Brisbane by Thomas Blacket Stephens. The last edition was printed on 22 February 1939. In a country the size of Australia, a daily newspaper of some prominence could only reach the bush and outlying districts if it also published a weekly edition. Electoral District Of Musgrave
Musgrave was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1886 to 1923. The district was initially created when the Electoral district of Townsville was split by the Additional Members Act of 1885. In 1888, Musgrave was replaced by Herbert, the name Musgrave was then assigned to a seat in the Bundaberg district.
