William Milne (rugby Union)
Rev. William Milne (27 July 1883 – 16 December 1982) was a Scotland international rugby union player. After playing rugby, he became a minister in the Church of Scotland. Edinburgh District (rugby Union)
Edinburgh District was a select provincial amateur rugby union team that drew its players mainly from the Edinburgh area, as well as others from the rest of east central Scotland; roughly corresponding to the old Lothian regional council area. Historically the Edinburgh District team played matches against touring teams visiting Scotland from abroad, and also competed in the Scottish Inter-District Championship. The Edinburgh District rugby union team was founded in 1872. The team played the world's first inter-district match that year against Glasgow District rugby union team. The amateur Edinburgh District side evolved into the professional Edinburgh Rugby side in 1996; one year after rugby union allowed professionalism in 1995. Provinces District is a select Scottish provincial amateur rugby union team that draws its players from outside the Glasgow District and Edinburgh District area. It is occasionally known as the Rest of Scotland or the North-South side. Founded in 1893, the Provinces District team - and its corresponding Cities District team - was created, thus halving Scotland's representative rugby union area in two. The Scottish Unofficial Championship was the top league of Scotland's best amateur rugby union clubs. The Championship was 'unofficial' as the Scottish Rugby Union held that the sport should remain amateur and at the time did not sanction competitive games between the clubs. History Numerous forms of football were played in Scotland in the years prior to the introduction of the Rugby rules which were adopted for the boys of Edinburgh Academy in the early 1850s. The game spread to Merchiston and the Royal High School with inter school games beginning in 1858. In 1857 the former pupils of Edinburgh Academy formed the first club in Scotland.
