William Henry Pferinger Elkins
Major General William Henry Pferinger Elkins, (13 June 1883–1964) was a Canadian soldier. He was a commandant of the RMC. Education 624 Major General William Henry Pferinger Elkins was born on 13 June 1883 at Sherbrooke, Quebec. He graduated from the Bishop's College School in Quebec in 1899 and Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, in June 1905. Career He was commissioned in the Royal Canadian Artillery; his first posting was to "B" Battery, RCHA. He served with "N" Battery, RHA in India from 1908 to 1910, and while on the sub-continent completed his captain qualifying examination. He served as Commanding Officer RCHA Brigade 1916–1922. In December 1917, he was evacuated due to illness and convalesced at the Prince of Wales Hospital for Officers at Marylebone, England. William Lukens Elkins
William Lukens Elkins (May 2, 1832 – November 7, 1903) was an American businessman and art collector. He began his working career as a grocer in Philadelphia and became a business tycoon with financial interests in oil, natural gas and transportation. He was one of the first to convert oil to gasoline and became a major shareholder in Standard Oil. He partnered with Peter Widener to found the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company and developed streetcar and railway systems throughout several major cities in the United States. He founded the United Gas Improvement Company and was a member of the board of directors of 24 companies. He was a collector of art and filled his Elkins Estate with over 132 paintings. William McIntyre Elkins (1882–1947) was an American collector of rare books and Dickensiana. Early life He was born September 3, 1882, in Philadelphia into the wealthy Elkins family. He was the son of George W. Elkins and grandson of William Lukens Elkins of Pennsylvania who made his fortune in oil and gasoline. William M. Elkins attended Harvard University, graduating in 1905. He spent much time in his early days with his cousin, Harry Elkins Widener, who was lost in the ''Titanic'' disaster in 1912. William McIntire Elkins was best known as a collector of rare books and art.
