William Garnett (civil Servant)
William Garnett (1793–1873) was an English civil servant. Biography Garnett, born in London on 13 November 1793, was the second and posthumous son of Thomas Garnett of Old Hutton, Kendal, who married Martha Rolfe, and died in 1793. By the premature death of his father, the care of William and his elder brother Thomas devolved at an early age on their cousin, Mr. T.C.Brooksbank of the treasury under whom they were educated, and eventually placed in public offices. William was appointed to the office for licensing hawkers and pedlars in 1807, at the age of only thirteen and a half years, and afterwards transferred to the tax office, in which he rose to the highest positions. He was deputy-registrar and registrar of the land-tax from 1819 to 1841, and was the author of valuable evidence on that subject given to the select committee on agricultural distress in 1836. William Garnett (politician)
William James Garnett (10 July 1818 – 15 September 1873) was a British Conservative Party politician from Bleasdale in Lancashire. He sat in the House of Commons from 1857 to 1864. Life His father, William Garnett, a cotton merchant of Lark Hill, Salford, had acquired a lease of the manor or forest of Bleasdale from the Crown and converted wild lands into meadow and pasture. He had built Bleasdale Tower and served as High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1843. William James bought Quernmore Park c.1842 and inherited the Bleasdale estate on the death of his father in 1863. He was appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire in 1852, and was elected at the 1857 general election as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the borough of Lancaster. He was re-elected in 1859, and held the seat until his resignation on 6 April 1864 by becoming Steward of the Manor of Northstead. He is buried in Brompton Cemetery towards the north-east. William A. Garnett (December 27, 1916 – August 26, 2006) was an American landscape photographer who specialized in aerial photography. Early life Garnett was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1916, and in 1920 his family moved to Pasadena, California. After graduating from Pasadena's John Muir Technical High School he studied for one year at the Art Center School in Los Angeles and then, beginning in 1938, he worked for two years as an independent commercial photographer and graphic designer. Career In 1940 he was hired as a photographer by the Pasadena Police Department, where he was employed for four years. In 1944 he worked briefly for the Lockheed aircraft company before being drafted into the U.S. Army, where he assisted in the production of training films for the U.S. Signal Corps. After leaving the Army in 1945 Garnett used the G.I. William Garnett (professor)
Dr. William Garnett (30 December 1850 – 1 November 1932) was a British professor and educational adviser, specialising in physics and mechanics and taking a special interest in electric street lighting. Early years Garnett was born in Portsea, Portsmouth, England in 1850, the son of William Garnett. In January 1863 he entered the City of London School, where he was a pupil of Thomas Hall. In the May 1866 examination, he obtained the first Royal Exhibition, tenable at the Royal School of Mines and College of Chemistry, and during the winter session, he studied under Dr. Edward Frankland and Professor John Tyndall, but in the following year, resigned the Exhibition and returned to the City of London School. In April 1869, he gained the Exhibition for Natural Science at St John's College, Cambridge, and in July of the same year, the Beaufoy Mathematical Scholarship at the City of London School, and commenced residence at St. John's College in October. William John Garnett
(William) John Poulton Maxwell Garnett (6 August 1921 – 14 August 1997) was a British industrial relations campaigner who led The Industrial Society (now The Work Foundation) from 1962 until 1986. Career After university, Garnett joined Imperial Chemical Industries as a graduate trainee, initially in Glasgow. He continued to work at ICI until 1962, becoming personnel manager at their plastics factory in Blackpool. In 1962, Garnett was appointed Director of "The Industrial Welfare Society", which he renamed to simply "The Industrial Society", from where he became a well-known speaker, campaigner and thought-leader in industrial relations for a quarter century, notably writing his thoughts up in ''The Work Challenge'', published in 1973. He was appointed a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 1970.
