William Frankfurth
William Frankfurth (1829–1891) was a German American businessman and founder of the ''German-English Academy '' (today University School of Milwaukee). Biography Frankfurth was born in Gudensberg, Hesse, Germany. He joined the Freie Gemeinde or "Free Thinkers" movement that arose in Germany and after the failed revolution of 1848, he immigrated to the United States in 1850, settling in Milwaukee. Gudensberg () is a small town in northern Hesse, Germany. John Pritzlaff Hardware Company
The John Pritzlaff Hardware Company is a complex of Italianate-styled buildings built from 1875 to 1919, a remnant of what was for years the largest wholesale hardware business in Milwaukee and the region. In 2013 the buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. John C. Pritzlaff was an immigrant from Pomerania, Prussia, who came to Milwaukee in 1841, before Wisconsin was a state. In 1850 he, August Suelflohn, and Henry Nazro opened a small hardware store on Third Street called ''John Pritzlaff and Company''. Pritzlaff became the sole owner in 1866. In 1875 Pritzlaff moved his business to the current location and shifted from retail to wholesale hardware. In that year he built the first structure. Turners (german: Turner) are members of German-American gymnastic clubs called Turnvereine. They promoted German culture, physical culture, and liberal politics. Turners, especially Francis Lieber, 1798–1872, were the leading sponsors of gymnastics as an American sport and the field of academic study. Peter Engelmann
Peter Engelmann (January 24, 1823May 17, 1874) was a German American immigrant, educationist, writer, and Wisconsin pioneer. He was the founder of the collection which became the Milwaukee Public Museum, and was also founder of the influential "German-English Academy" of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which lives on as part of the University School of Milwaukee. Early life and flight from Germany Peter Engelmann was born on January 24, 1823, in Argenthal, in the Rhine Province of the Kingdom of Prussia. He studied at the University of Heidelberg and at the Humboldt University of Berlin. He received his teaching license in 1846, and began teaching at the Kreuznach Gymnasium that year.
