William Francis (chemist)
William Francis (16 February 1817 - 19 January 1904) was a British chemist, scientific author and publisher. Early life He was born in London, the son of Richard Taylor (1781-1858), an English naturalist and publisher of scientific journals, and Frances Marshall Francis (1797–1854). He attended University College School before studying abroad in France and Germany. After studying chemistry and biology at University of London he obtained a Ph.D at the University of Giessen in 1842 under Liebig. Career He established and edited the Chemical Gazette from 1842 to 1859 when it merged with the Chemical News. He edited the Philosophical Magazine from 1851 and the Annals and Magazine of Natural History from 1859. He translated and published many works on chemistry. In 1841 he was one of the original members of the Chemical Society. Richmond Cemetery
Richmond Cemetery is a cemetery on Lower Grove Road in Richmond in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, England. The cemetery opened in 1786 on a plot of land granted by an Act of Parliament the previous year. The cemetery has been expanded several times and now occupies a 15-acre (6-hectare) site which, prior to the expansion of London, was a rural area of Surrey. It is bounded to the east by Richmond Park and to the north by East Sheen Cemetery, with which it is now contiguous and whose chapel is used for services by both cemeteries. Richmond cemetery originally contained two chapels—one Anglican and one Nonconformist—both built in the Gothic revival style, but both are now privately owned and the Nonconformist chapel today falls outside the cemetery walls after a redrawing of its boundaries. Physical Society Of London
The Physical Society of London, England, was a scientific society which was founded in 1874. In 1921, it was renamed the Physical Society, and in 1960 it merged with the Institute of Physics (IOP), the combined organisation eventually adopting the name of the latter society. The society was founded due to the efforts of Frederick Guthrie, Professor of Physics at the Royal College of Science, South Kensington, and his assistant, William Fletcher Barrett. They canvassed support for a 'Society for physical research' and on 14 February 1874, the Physical Society of London was formed with an initial membership of 29 people.
