William F. Tompkins (politician)
William Finley Tompkins (February 26, 1913 – July 6, 1989) was an American Republican Party politician who served as the U.S. Attorney from New Jersey and as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly. Early life Tompkins was born in Newark, New Jersey, on February 26, 1913, the son of William Brydon Tompkins (1866–1918) and Elizabeth Lillian Finley (1883–1967). His family emigrated to the United States from England in the 1600s. He was a graduate of Wesleyan University and Rutgers University Law School. He served as a United States Army Lieutenant during World War II and he later prosecuted war crimes charges in Singapore. He was a partner at the Newark law firm of Lum, Fairlie & Foster. Nicholas Fernicola
Nicholas T. Fernicola (August 8, 1903 – February 7, 1982) was an American Democratic Party politician who served as a New Jersey State senator. He was a Criminal Court Judge for the City of Newark from 1948 to 1959, and was appointed Essex County Counsel in 1959. He was elected to the New Jersey State Senate in 1965. During his two years in the Senate, Fernicola played a role in raising the state contribution to junior colleges from $200 per student to $600. He was an unsuccessful candidate for re-election to a second term in 1967. He was the liaison officer between the Newark City Council and the New Jersey Legislature from 1972 to 1975. Thomas Howard Kean ( ; born April 21, 1935) is an American businessman, academic administrator and politician. A member of the Republican Party, Kean served as the 48th governor of New Jersey from 1982 to 1990. Following his tenure as governor, Kean served as the president of Drew University for 15 years, retiring in 2005. In 2002, Kean was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as chairman of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, widely known as the 9/11 Commission. New Jersey State Senate
The New Jersey Senate was established as the upper house of the New Jersey Legislature by the Constitution of 1844, replacing the Legislative Council. There are 40 legislative districts, representing districts with an average population of 232,225 (2020 figure). Each district has one senator and two members of the New Jersey General Assembly, the lower house of the legislature. Prior to the election in which they are chosen, senators must be a minimum of 30 years old and a resident of the state for four years to be eligible to serve in office. From 1844 until 1965 (when the ''Reynolds v. Sims'' US Supreme Court decision mandated all state legislators be elected from districts of roughly equal population), each county was an electoral district electing one senator.
