William Chatterton
William Chatterton (27 December 1861 β 19 March 1913) was an English cricketer and footballer. He played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1882 and 1902 and for England on their tour of South Africa in 1891β92. He captained Derbyshire between 1887 and 1889 and scored over 10,000 runs in his first-class career as well as taking over 200 wickets. He played football for Derby County, being one of 19 sportsmen to achieve the Derbyshire Double of playing cricket for Derbyshire and football for Derby County. Life Chatterton was born at Thornsett, Birch Vale, Derbyshire, the son of David Chatterton, a cotton mill fireman, and his wife Hannah. In 1881 he was a cotton carrier in the mills at Newton Cheshire. Cricket career Chatterton started playing cricket for Derbyshire in the 1882 season and football for Derby County in 1884. Thornsett
Thornsett is a hamlet within the civil parish of New Mills in Derbyshire. It lies between New Mills and Hayfield, and features a primary school, a nursery, two pubs, a band room and a cemetery (created in 1993). It is roughly southeast of central Manchester and west of Sheffield. The hamlet is governed by High Peak Borough Council and, as it lies within New Mills' parish boundaries, New Mills Town Council. History Thornsett has always been in Derbyshire, unlike some other parts of New Mills. It was originally grouped, along with Beard, Ollersett and Whitle, as one of the ten hamlets that formed the area of Bowden Middlecale. Derbyshire County Cricket Club In 1889
Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1889 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing nineteen years. Derbyshire's matches were not considered to be first class in this season. The club had lost first class status after 1887 and did not regain it until 1894, the year before they joined the County Championship. However many of the players competed for the club earlier or subsequently at first-class level. 1889 season Derbyshire played eleven games, all against sides that they had played in first class matches before 1888 or that joined the County Championship four years later. William Chatterton was in his third year as captain and was also top scorer making a century against Essex. George Davidson topped the bowling with 38 wickets. The County Cricket Ground (usually shortened to the County Ground, also known as the Racecourse Ground; currently the Incora County Ground due to sponsorship) is a cricket ground in Derby, England. It has been the home of Derbyshire County Cricket Club since 1871. The ground was first used by South Derbyshire Cricket Club in 1863 and was initially located within Derby Racecourse, although racing ceased after 1939. The ground has staged two One-Day Internationals: New Zealand against Sri Lanka during the 1983 ICC Cricket World Cup and New Zealand against Pakistan during the 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup. Levi Wright
Levi George Wright (15 January 1862 β 11 January 1953) was an English footballer and first-class cricketer. He played association football for Derby County and Notts County and cricket for Derbyshire from 1883 to 1909 being captain for a season and a half in 1906β07. He scored over 15,000 runs in his first-class career and took 237 catches. He was one of nineteen sportsman who achieved the Derbyshire Double of playing cricket for Derbyshire and football for Derby County. Wright was born at Oxford and moved to Derby in 1881 to become a teacher at St Anne's School. He first played for the Napier Cricket Club, a pub team based at 'Sir Charles Napier' in Derby and then for the Derby Midland Club. Thorneyholme Road is a cricket and former football ground in Accrington, England. It is the home ground of Accrington Cricket Club, and was the home ground of Accrington F.C. from 1878 until 1896 when they dissolved. History Thorneyholme Road was opened as a cricket ground in 1878 when Accrington Cricket Club moved to the site. Accrington F.C. were founded in the same year, and also became based at the ground. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1902 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for thirty-one years. It was their eighth season in the County Championship and they won five matches to finish tenth in the Championship table. 1902 season Derbyshire played sixteen games in the County Championship in 1902, two matches against London County, one match against MCC and one against the touring Australians. Derbyshire won four matches in the County Championship which brought them up to tenth in the table. The captain for the year was Albert Lawton in his first season as captain. Maynard Ashcroft was top scorer. Billy Bestwick took most wickets.
