William Brennan (Australian Politician)
William Edward Brennan (10 September 18638 October 1937) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council between 1925 and 1934 and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1934 until 1935. He was a member of the Labor Party (ALP) . Brennan was born and educated to elementary level in Wallsend, New South Wales. At age 14, he commenced work as a coal-miner at Wallsend Colliery. He was an office-holder in the Colliery Employees Federation from 1903 and in 1909, after leading a strike, he was convicted of conspiracy under the Master and Servant Act and goaled at Bathurst for 3 months. In 1925, after a number of unsuccessful attempts to win the seat of Maitland, Brennan was granted a life appointment to the New South Wales Legislative Council. Wallsend, New South Wales
Wallsend is a western suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia from Newcastle's central business district. It is part of the City of Newcastle local government area. Origins The Awabakal and Worimi peoples are acknowledged by City of Newcastle as the descendants of the traditional custodians of the land situated within the Newcastle local government area, including wetlands, rivers creeks and coastal environments. It is known that their heritage and cultural ties to Newcastle date back tens of thousands of years. Lieutenant Edward Close, an engineer and founder of Morpeth, recorded that part of the Wallsend area was called Barrahinebin by the Aboriginal custodians. Close reported that Barrahinebin was used to describe the area bounded by the Hunter River, Ironbark Creek and Mount Sugarloaf. 1935 New South Wales State Election
The 1935 New South Wales state election was held on 11 May 1935. This election was for all of the 90 seats in the 31st New South Wales Legislative Assembly and was conducted in single member constituencies with compulsory preferential voting. The result of the election was: * United Australia Party 38 seats * Country Party 23 seats * Australian Labor Party (NSW) 29 seats. The UAP/Country Party coalition of Bertram Stevens/Michael Bruxner had a majority of 32 (down 10) and continued in government throughout the term. Labor (NSW) and the Federal Executive of the Australian Labor Party were still divided at the 1935 election and Federal Labor ran candidates in 22 seats without success. The parties were re-united in 1936. Jack Lang remained party leader and Leader of the Opposition throughout the term of the parliament. Joshua Arthur
Joshua George Arthur (27 January 1906 – 20 May 1974) was an Australian schoolteacher and politician who represented the Hamilton and Kahibah districts for the Labor Party. Early life Born to Joshua Arthur, a blacksmith, and Ethel May Embleton in Adamstown, New South Wales. He was educated at Adamstown Public School, Newcastle High School and Sydney Teachers College, graduating in 1924. He taught for the New South Wales Department of Education from 1925 until 1935, in the Wellington, Sydney and Newcastle districts. He served in the second Australian Imperial Forces. Enlisted in 1940, served in North Africa and on the staff of the Minister for the Army, Frank Forde, from 1943 until 1945. Political career Arthur was the member for Hamilton, winning the seat at the 1935, 1938, 1941, 1944 and 1947 State elections. Arthur transferred to the new seat of Kahibah at the 1950 State election. Hugh Connell
Hugh John Connell DSO, MC & Bar (12 June 1884 – 31 January 1934) was an Australian politician from the Labor Party and a soldier who served in World War I. Early life Connell was born in the Sydney suburb of Woollahra, New South Wales and educated at Woollahra and Paddington public schools, Fort Street High School and at a teachers' training college. He taught at state schools in Sydney (1900–1905), Golgolgon and Tarcoon (1905–1908), Broken Hill and nearby Alma (1908–1910). As a result of criticism of employers during the 1909 lockout, he was transferred to Goulburn. He then taught at Howell (near Guyra), the Newcastle suburb of Wickham and the Sydney suburb of Burwood (1910–1915) and finally at the Newcastle suburb of Carrington. Military service Connell served from the outbreak of World War I in military training and in 1916 joined the First Australian Imperial Force as a lieutenant in the 35th Battalion and was promoted to captain in May 1916.
