William Bowie (agrarian)
William Bowie (January 29, 1776 – 1826) was an agrarian and delegate to the state convention to charter the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. Born at ''Locust Grove'' in Prince George's County, Maryland on January 29, 1776 to Walter Bowie and Mary (Brooks) Bowie, William Bowie was the only member of his family who did not engage in politics. He was appointed Justice of the Peace from 1808 to 1810 and became a member of the Levy Court in 1820. In 1825, Bowie was selected by Joseph Kent, governor of Maryland at that time, to be a delegate to the state convention to charter the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. He married Kitty Beans Duckett and had several children including William Duckett Bowie William Duckett Bowie (7 October 1803 – 18 July 1873), was an American politician. Chesapeake & Ohio Canal
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, abbreviated as the C&O Canal and occasionally called the "Grand Old Ditch," operated from 1831 until 1924 along the Potomac River between Washington, D.C. and Cumberland, Maryland. It replaced the Potomac Canal, which shut down completely in 1828, and could operate during months in which the water level was too low for the former canal. The canal's principal cargo was coal from the Allegheny Mountains. Construction on the canal began in 1828 and ended in 1850 with the completion of a stretch to Cumberland, although the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad had already reached Cumberland in 1842. Rising and falling over an elevation change of , it required the construction of 74 canal locks, 11 aqueducts to cross major streams, more than 240 culverts to cross smaller streams, and the Paw Paw Tunnel. Walter Bowie
Walter Bowie (October 15, 1748 – November 9, 1810) was an American slave owner and politician. Biography Born in Mattaponi, near Nottingham, Prince George's County, Maryland, Bowie attended Reverend John Eversfield's School near Nottingham, the common schools in Annapolis, and Craddock’s School near Baltimore. His father, Captain William Bowie bought him a large farm near Collington, Maryland, known originally as "Darnell's Grove" and later as "Locust Grove" and "Willow Grove". He engaged in agricultural pursuits, was a large landowner, and also was interested in shipping. He served as one of four members of the Maryland constitutional convention from Prince George's County in November 1776. Joseph Kent
Joseph Kent (January 14, 1779November 24, 1837), a Whig, was a United States Senator from Maryland, serving from 1833 until his death in 1837. He also served in the House of Representatives, serving the second district of Maryland from 1811 to 1815 and again from 1819 to 1826, and as the 19th Governor of Maryland from 1826 to 1829. Early life and career Born on January 14, 1779, in Calvert County, Maryland. He was the son of Daniel Kent, Sr. (1754–1805) and Anne Weems Wheeler (1761–1823). William Duckett Bowie (7 October 1803 – 18 July 1873), was an American politician. The eldest child of William Bowie and Kitty Beanes Duckett, he was born at Fairview Plantation in Prince George's County, Maryland. Career and Wealth His maternal grandfather, Baruch Duckett left him Quarter Plantation near Collington, Maryland where he settled after leaving college as well as a sizeable number of slaves After the death of his two brothers, Governor Robert Bowie in 1818 and Walter Baruch Bowie in 1832, and by purchasing the interests of his sisters, he became the owner of Fairview where he then made his home. Upon the death of his father in 1810, William Duckett Bowie was made the executor of his will which increased his wealth significantly and his uncle, Daniel Bowie bequeathed to him all of his land upon his death as well which combined, made him one of the wealthiest planters in Prince George's County.
