William Duckett Bowie
William Duckett Bowie (7 October 1803 – 18 July 1873), was an American politician. The eldest child of William Bowie and Kitty Beanes Duckett, he was born at Fairview Plantation in Prince George's County, Maryland. Career and Wealth His maternal grandfather, Baruch Duckett left him Quarter Plantation near Collington, Maryland where he settled after leaving college as well as a sizeable number of slaves After the death of his two brothers, Governor Robert Bowie in 1818 and Walter Baruch Bowie in 1832, and by purchasing the interests of his sisters, he became the owner of Fairview where he then made his home. Upon the death of his father in 1810, William Duckett Bowie was made the executor of his will which increased his wealth significantly and his uncle, Daniel Bowie bequeathed to him all of his land upon his death as well which combined, made him one of the wealthiest planters in Prince George's County. William Bowie (agrarian)
William Bowie (January 29, 1776 – 1826) was an agrarian and delegate to the state convention to charter the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. Born at ''Locust Grove'' in Prince George's County, Maryland on January 29, 1776 to Walter Bowie and Mary (Brooks) Bowie, William Bowie was the only member of his family who did not engage in politics. He was appointed Justice of the Peace from 1808 to 1810 and became a member of the Levy Court in 1820. In 1825, Bowie was selected by Joseph Kent, governor of Maryland at that time, to be a delegate to the state convention to charter the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. The Maryland Senate, sometimes referred to as the Maryland State Senate, is the upper house of the General Assembly, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Maryland. Thomas Sim Lee
Thomas Sim Lee (October 29, 1745 – November 9, 1819) was an American planter and statesman of Frederick County, Maryland. Although not a signatory to the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation or the U.S. Constitution, he was an important participant in the process of their creation. Thomas Sim Lee was the second State Governor of Maryland, serving twice, from 1779 to 1783 and again from 1792 to 1794. Thomas Sim Lee also served as a delegate of Maryland in the Congress of the Confederation in 1783 and was a member of the House of Delegates in 1787. He worked closely with many of the Founding fathers and himself played an important part in the birth of his state and the nation. Croom, Maryland
Croom is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Southern Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2020 census it had a population of 2,720. Croom largely consists of former tobacco farms and forests converted to Washington bedroom subdivisions such as nearby Marlton. The main (Jug Bay Natural Area) part of Patuxent River Park is in Croom. History The community was patented in 1671 as ''Croome'' by Christopher Rousby; it was named for the manor of Croom, near Sledmere in the East Riding of Yorkshire. In August 1814, British forces marched through Croom on their way to the Burning of Washington in the War of 1812. Bellefields (Croom, Maryland)
Bellefields is a manor house located in Croom, Prince George's County, Maryland. It was constructed about 1720. It is a brick structure in Flemish bond with random glazed headers, and two stories over a high basement. The structure is rectangular, with gabled roof sections, paired interior end chimneys, a front center entrance, wide raised belt course above the first floor, flat arched openings, and flanking symmetrical single-story wings. It is in the Georgian style. It was the home of Patrick Sim, Scottish immigrant and of his son, Col. Joseph Sim, Maryland patriot. History Later, sometime after 1849, William Duckett Bowie lived there with his second wife. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Oden Bowie
Oden Bowie (November 10, 1826December 4, 1894), a member of the United States Democratic Party, was the 34th Governor of the State of Maryland in the United States from 1869 to 1872. Childhood He was born in 1826 at Fairview Plantation in Collington, Maryland, the oldest son of Colonel William Duckett Bowie and Eliza Mary Oden. He spent the bulk of his childhood at Fairview where he was educated by a private tutor until his mother died when he was nine years old. After his mother's death, he was sent to the preparatory department of St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland where he studied for three years. At age twelve, he enrolled in St. Mary's Seminary and University and graduated in July 1845 as valedictorian of his class. Fairview Plantation
Fairview construction began around the year 1788 on an expanse of land owned by Baruch Duckett in Collington, Maryland (now the census-designated place of Fairwood). The house is a transitional federal/Greek revival design considered to be a significant part of the Prince George's County heritage. Fairview is a two-story stuccoed brick plantation house with flush end chimneys and a unique stepped gable at one gable end. Its Georgian plan interior features fine Federal style trim. History Upon his death in 1810 at Fairview, Duckett left the estate to his son-in-law, Captain William Duckett Bowie.
