William Barrington (diplomat)
Sir William Augustus Curzon Barrington (28 January 1842 – 23 February 1922) was a British diplomat. Background Born at Beckett Hall in Berkshire, he was the third son of William Barrington, 6th Viscount Barrington and his wife Jane Elizabeth, fourth daughter of Thomas Liddell, 1st Baron Ravensworth. His older brothers were George Barrington, 7th Viscount Barrington and Percy Barrington, 8th Viscount Barrington. Having been previously in private schools in Cheam and in Woolwich, Barrington received his further education in Germany, in schools at Mannheim and at Bonn. Diplomatic career Barrington joined the Diplomatic Service in 1860. After four years he was promoted to a 3rd secretary and in 1870 to a 2nd secretary. He was sent as secretary of legation to Buenos Aires in 1883 and was transferred to Budapest as consul-general two years later. Beckett Hall
Beckett Hall (or Beckett House) is a country house at Shrivenham in the English county of Oxfordshire (formerly in Berkshire). The present house dates from 1831. History This manor is first mentioned in the Domesday survey, and was acquired by King John in 1204. The property was held by William, the Count of Evreux, on behalf of King John who occasionally made residence there. In return for service, King John granted ownership of the estate to the de Becote family who held the manor until 1424. In 1633, the Manor was bought by Sir Henry Marten, a judge, then inherited by his son Henry Marten, a prominent Civil War politician and one of the regicides of King Charles I. In 1648, the house was ransacked by royalists. On the son's death, the lands were sold to Sir George Pratt. In 1666, John Wildman bought the property. Wildman's son adopted John Shute as his heir. James Rennell Rodd, 1st Baron Rennell, (9 November 1858 – 26 July 1941), known as Sir Rennell Rodd before 1933, was a British diplomat, poet and politician. Sir Francis Pakenham (29 February 1832 – 26 January 1905) was a British diplomat who was envoy to Chile, Argentina and Sweden. Career The Honourable Francis John Pakenham was the seventh son of Thomas Pakenham, 2nd Earl of Longford. He was educated privately and at Christ Church, Oxford.
