James Willcocks
General Sir James Willcocks, (1 April 1857 – 18 December 1926) was a British Army officer who spent most of his career in India and Africa and held high command during the First World War. Early life and education Willcocks was born in Baraut, Meerut District, United Provinces, India, the son of an officer in the East India Company's army. He was educated in England and passed out from the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, in January 1878 (having only got in on the third attempt), being commissioned into the 100th Foot in the Punjab. Military career as a company and field officer In late 1879, shortly after being promoted lieutenant, Willcocks persuaded his superiors to send him to the Second Afghan War (although his regiment was not engaged there), where he served as a transport officer. Sir David Willcocks
Sir David Valentine Willcocks, (30 December 1919 – 17 September 2015) was a British choral conductor, organist, composer and music administrator. He was particularly well known for his association with the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, which he directed from 1957 to 1974, making frequent broadcasts and recordings. Several of the descants and carol arrangements he wrote for the annual service of Nine Lessons and Carols were published in the series of books '' Carols for Choirs'' which he edited along with Reginald Jacques and John Rutter. He was also director of the Royal College of Music in London. During the Second World War (1939–1945) he served as an officer in the British Army, and was decorated with the Military Cross for his actions on Hill 112 during the Battle of Normandy in July 1944. Joseph Willcocks
Joseph Willcocks (1773 – September 4, 1814) sometimes spelt Wilcox was a publisher and political figure in Upper Canada. He was elected to the Parliament of Upper Canada in 1807 representing York, 1st Lincoln and Haldimand. He was re-elected twice and frequently opposed government policies. He became disillusioned with Upper Canada after a military rule was introduced to Upper Canada during the War of 1812 and defected to the United States. He was mortally shot on September 4, 1814 at Fort Erie, and buried in Buffalo, New York. Early life He was born in Palmerstown, Ireland in 1773. He was the second son to Robert Willcocks and Jane Powell. During the Irish Rebellion of 1798 he was loyal to the British Empire. He came to York on March 20, 1800. Dianne Marie Willcocks CBE DL (born 5 May 1945) was the Vice-Chancellor of York St John University until retirement in April 2010 and is a former Deputy Principal of Sheffield Hallam University. Biography She received a Dip.M from Ealing College of Higher Education in 1966, and a BSc (Hons) in Human Sciences from the University of Surrey in 1976. Willcocks worked as Director of Research at the University of North London. She moved from London to Sheffield as Assistant Principal of Sheffield Hallam University. In 1999 she became the first Principal of Rip and York St John College in 160 years. She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2008 Birthday Honours. William Willcocks
Sir William Willcocks (27 September 1852 in India – 28 July 1932 in Cairo, Egypt) was a British civil engineer during the high point of the British Empire. He was an irrigation engineer who proposed and built the first Aswan Dam, the scale of which had never been attempted previously. He later undertook other major irrigation projects in South Africa and in Arab regions of the dying Ottoman Empire. Biography Willcocks was one of four sons of a British Engineer posted in Roorkee for Ganges canal works. He graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee in 1872, and joined the Indian Public Works Department the same year. Following the British invasion and occupation of Egypt, he began work with the long-established Egyptian Public Works Department in 1883. Jonathan Willcocks (born 9 January 1953) is an English composer and conductor. Willcocks was born in Worcester, the son of conductor and composer Sir David Willcocks. He was a chorister at King's College, Cambridge, and an Open Music Scholar at Clifton College.
