Wilding Park
Wilding Park is a tennis facility located in Christchurch, New Zealand. The land at Wilding Park was purchased by the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association in the early 1920s and gradually developed into a tennis centre. Several years ago, during the restructure of tennis in New Zealand, the Wilding Park assets were transferred to the Wilding Park Foundation Incorporated to ensure they were held in trust in perpetuity for the tennis players of the region. From the 1970s for three decades Wilding Park was known as ‘Davis Cup City’ with most of New Zealand's home ties played there; this included many World Group ties or the earlier equivalent Zone Finals. In the last decade it has hosted annual ITF Junior Circuit events, Futures tennis tournaments, the ITF World Team Cup, ITF Super Seniors, an Asian Zone Fed Cup tournament and the 2011 ITF Seniors Championships. Avonside, New Zealand
Avonside is an eastern suburb in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is one of the oldest suburbs of the city, with only Heathcote being older. History The suburb was named after Holy Trinity Avonside, which was built beside the Avon River in 1855. The 1874 part of the church was designed by the eminent architect Benjamin Mountfort who is buried in the churchyard. The church was damaged in the 2010 Canterbury earthquake and whilst under repair, was damaged beyond repair in the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake and demolished later that year. Avonside is home to Avonside Girls' High School. It also has the Avon River flowing through it. ITF Junior Circuit
The ITF Junior Circuit is the premier level for worldwide competition among under-18 junior tennis players. Founded in 1977 with only nine tournaments, the 2011 ITF Junior Circuit offered over 350 tournaments in 118 countries. Mirroring the ATP and WTA circuits, the ITF Junior Circuit ranks players and crowns a year end world champion. History The ITF Junior Circuit is organized by the International Tennis Federation. The ITF World Tennis Tour (formerly known as the ''ITF Men's World Tennis Tour'', and previously ''ITF Men's Circuit'') is a series of professional tennis tournaments held around the world that are organized by the International Tennis Federation. Frederick Wilding
Frederick Wilding (20 November 1852 – 5 July 1945) played first-class cricket for Canterbury in the 1880s and 1890s. He also played tennis and was a noted athlete. Early life Wilding was born in Montgomery, Wales in 1852. His father, John Powell Wilding (1812–1872), was a surgeon. His mother was Harriet (). He was educated at Hereford Cathedral School in Hereford and at Shrewsbury School in Shrewsbury, England. He gained admission as a solicitor in 1874. Wilding was prominent as an athlete in the west of England. In June 1879, he married Julia Wilding (née Anthony), the daughter of a mayor of Hereford. In the same year, they emigrated from Herefordshire to New Zealand. Life in New Zealand Wilding became a well-to-do lawyer in Christchurch, New Zealand, and was appointed a King's Counsel in 1913. Tony Wilding
Anthony Frederick Wilding (31 October 1883 – 9 May 1915), also known as Tony Wilding, was a New Zealand world No. 1 tennis player and soldier who was killed in action during World War I. Considered the world's first tennis superstar, Wilding was the son of wealthy English immigrants to Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand and enjoyed the use of private tennis courts at their home. He obtained a legal education at Trinity College, Cambridge and briefly joined his father's law firm. Wilding was a first-class cricketer and a keen motorcycle enthusiast. 2011 Christchurch Earthquake
A major earthquake occurred in Christchurch on Tuesday 22 February 2011 at 12:51 p.m. local time (23:51 UTC, 21 February). The () earthquake struck the entire of the Canterbury region in the South Island, centred south-east of the central business district. It caused widespread damage across Christchurch, killing 185 people, in New Zealand's fifth-deadliest disaster.
