Wilburton, Kansas
Wilburton is an unincorporated community in Morton County, Kansas, United States, located along U.S. Route 56 highway and the Cimarron Valley Railroad northeast of Elkhart. History Kansas Territory was organized in 1854 and Kansas became the 34th U.S. state in 1861. In 1886, Morton County was established, which included land for modern day Wilburton. A post office was opened in Wilburton in 1913, and remained in operation until 1957. The Dust Bowl was a period of severe dust storms that greatly damaged the ecology and agriculture of the American and Canadian prairies during the 1930s. Elkhart is a city in and the county seat of Morton County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 1,888. The south edge of the city is the Kansas-Oklahoma state border, and the city is from the Kansas-Colorado border. History Elkhart was founded in 1913, and was named after Elkhart, Indiana. Elkhart was the starting point of the Elkhart and Santa Fe Railway. Cimarron Valley Railroad
The Cimarron Valley Railroad was built c. 1912 and purchased from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad in February 1996. It runs over former C.V. and Manter Subdivisions of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad tracks in Oklahoma, Colorado and Kansas. One line runs from Dodge City, KS to Boise City, OK, the other from Satanta, KS to Springfield, CO. It runs a total of 254 miles of track primarily hauling agricultural commodities (such as wheat, corn, and milo), along with sand, cement, poles, pipe, and fertilizers. Area Code 620
Area code 620 covers telephone exchanges in most of southern Kansas. It was created as the result of a split from 316 on February 3, 2001. The area code stretches across the southern half of the state, from the Colorado border in the west to the Missouri border in the east. It completely surrounds 316, which now only serves Wichita and its inner suburbs, making it one of the six pairs of "doughnut area codes" in the numbering plan. Permissive dialing of 316 across southern Kansas continued until November 3, 2001.
