Wikitongues
Wikitongues is an American non-profit organization registered in the state of New York. It aims to sustain and promote all the languages in the world. It was founded by Frederico Andrade, Daniel Bögre Udell and Lindie Botes in 2014. Oral histories By May 2016, Wikitongues had recorded around 329 videos in over 200 languages. As of 2018, they have recorded more than 350 languages, or 5% of the languages in the world. They also have 15% of their videos subtitled through the organization Amara, formerly known as Universal Subtitles, which is a web-based non-profit project that hosts and allows user-subtitled video to be accessed and created. Poly Poly is open source software built to share and learn languages. The project was supported on Kickstarter and the organization was able to raise US$52,716 with the help of 429 backers. Amara (subtitling)
Amara, formerly known as Universal Subtitles, is a web-based non-profit project created by the Participatory Culture Foundation that hosts and allows user-subtitled video to be accessed and created. Users upload video through many major video hosting websites such as YouTube, Vimeo, and Ustream to subtitle. It uses crowdsourcing techniques to subtitle video as well as having a paid service for professionally created subtitles. Users of the project and service include Mozilla, PBS, Khan Academy, Netflix, Twitter, TED Talks, Coursera, Udacity, and Google. Most companies listed have "teams" organized by Amara on the website that focus on translation and caption of videos. Amara claims that it lowers the cost of captioning and translation by at least 95 percent because of their volunteer-based system. Great Big Story was a media company producing micro-documentaries based in New York with offices in London. Launched in October 2015 by CNN, the company created 2,600 videos, being published on various websites such as Facebook and YouTube. Videos produced by the company featured varied subjects conducting their routine of their unusual or intriguing acts. Great Big Story employed a total of duty 84 staff members, spread across its three locations. At the head of the company was Andrew Morse and Courtney Coupe. On September 23, 2020, Great Big Story announced on Twitter that the company would be closing.
