Whitford, Flintshire
Whitford ( cy, Maes Rhydwen) is a village, community and an electoral ward near Holywell in Flintshire, northeast Wales. The population of both the community and the ward taken at the 2011 census was 2,332. The community includes the villages of Carmel, Lloc, Gorsedd and Pantasaph. It is best known as the former home of traveller and writer Thomas Pennant. The parish church of St Mary and St Beuno is thought to have been founded by St Beuno in the 7th century and later re-dedicated to St Mary after the Norman conquest. It was restored in the 19th century and is a grade I listed building. The Whitford electoral ward is coterminous with the community and elects one county councillor to Flintshire County Council Flintshire County Council is the unitary local authority for the county of Flintshire, one of the principal areas of Wales. Church Of St Beuno And St Mary
The Church of St Beuno and St Mary is a Grade I listed church in Whitford, overlooking the estuary of the river Dee. The church has a well preserved late medieval interior and includes a series of notable monuments dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. The Church is part of the Diocese of St Asaph and is one of the ancient parishes of Flintshire, with its earliest definite mention being in the Doomsday book, written in 1086. It is believed, however, to have been founded in the 7th century by St Beuno, to whom it was solely dedicated before the Norman conquests of north Wales. In more recent times the church has been heavily patronised by the Mostyn family, who funded the rebuilding of the church in 1842-3, and whose descendants were buried there until 1651. Flintshire County Council
Flintshire County Council is the unitary local authority for the county of Flintshire, one of the principal areas of Wales. It is based at County Hall in Mold. Elections take place every five years. The last election was on 5 May 2022. History Flintshire County Council was first created in 1889 under the Local Government Act 1888, which established elected county councils to take over the administrative functions of the quarter sessions. That county council and the administrative county of Flintshire were abolished in 1974, when the area merged with neighbouring Denbighshire to become the new county of Clwyd. Flintshire was unusual in retaining exclaves right up until the 1974 reforms. Thomas Pennant
Thomas Pennant (14 June Old Style, OS 172616 December 1798) was a Welsh natural history, naturalist, traveller, writer and antiquarian. He was born and lived his whole life at his family estate, Downing Hall near Whitford, Flintshire, in Wales. As a naturalist he had a great curiosity, observing the geography, geology, plants, animals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish around him and recording what he saw and heard about. He wrote acclaimed books including ''British Zoology'', the ''History of Quadrupeds'', ''Arctic Zoology'' and ''Indian Zoology'' although he never travelled further afield than continental Europe. He knew and maintained correspondence with many of the scientific figures of his day. His books influenced the writings of Samuel Johnson. Pantasaph
Pantasaph is a small village in Flintshire, north-east Wales, two miles south of Holywell in the community of Whitford. Its name translates into English as Asaph's Hollow. History Once abbey land belonging to nearby Basingwerk Abbey, Pantasaph came into the possession of the Pennant family at the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The land passed down in the family until 1846, when the sole heiress Louisa married Rudolph, Viscount Feilding, heir to the 7th Earl of Denbigh. They both converted to Roman Catholicism and decided to donate St David's Church, which they had recently built for the village, to the Roman Catholic Church. This caused a considerably outcry at the time. It was accepted by the Friars Minor Capuchin of Great Britain as their mother house and opened in 1852. Clwyd
Clwyd () is a preserved county of Wales, situated in the north-east corner of the country; it is named after the River Clwyd, which runs through the area.
