White Oak High School is a public high school located in the city of White Oak, Texas, in Gregg County, United States and classified as a 3A school by the UIL. It is a part of the White Oak Independent School District located in west central Gregg County. In 2015, the school was rated " Met Standard" by the Texas Education Agency. White Oak, Texas
White Oak is a city in Gregg County, Texas, United States. It was incorporated in 1960. The population was 6,225 as of 2020. History In the late 1800s White Oak was a small farming community with three sawmills located on thick forested land. By 1884, there were 15 families living in the area and either working at the large sawmills or farming the land. A small school was built near Hawkins Creek which doubled as a church. The school burned to the ground in 1885 due to suspected arson. A new school was established in 1887. Local land owners, Andrew J. Tuttle and his father-in-law, John Bumpus, gathered a group of men in the area to erect a new school. Mr. Tuttle's uncle, Pleas Harris, and Kaleb Bumpus donated ground near a spring on which to build the new school. Local tales say Tuttle and Bumpus noticed the two White Oak trees on either side of the building after construction. It was then decided the community would be known as White Oak. Michael Dwayne “Mike” Barber (born June 4, 1953) is a former American football player; he played as a tight end. Early life and education Barber attended White Oak High School, where he played Quarterback, passing for over 4,000 yards, and graduated in 1972. He then attended Louisiana Tech where he was converted to Tight end. He was voted a 1974 Little All-American, as was Bulldog teammate and future Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end Fred Dean. He was selected in the second round of 1976 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. He played for the Oilers for six years, and then finished his career playing four years for the Los Angeles Rams. Russell Gene Wayt (born October 6, 1942) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys. He played college football at Rice University. Early years Wayt attended White Oak High School. He accepted a football scholarship from Rice University. He was a two-way player at fullback and linebacker. As a sophomore, he was second on the team with 70 carries for 277 yards (4-yard avg.). As a junior, he was third on the team with 43 carries for 161 yards (3.7-yard avg.) and one touchdown. William Max McGee (July 16, 1932 – October 20, 2007) was a professional football player, a wide receiver and punter for the Green Bay Packers in the NFL. He played from 1954 to 1967, and is best known for his seven receptions for 138 yards and two touchdowns, scoring the first touchdown, in the first Super Bowl in 1967.
