White City Speedway (Manchester) were a British motorcycle speedway team who operated between 1928 and 1930 and were based at White City Stadium (Manchester), Chester Road, Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. White City Stadium (Manchester)
White City Stadium was a greyhound racing and speedway stadium in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. Origins Construction Manchester is synonymous with greyhound racing because Belle Vue Stadium became the first greyhound track in the United Kingdom and Ireland to hold oval course racing in 1926. One year later on 1 November 1927 the remaining eleven acres out of a sixteen-acre plot of land belonging to the Royal Botanical Gardens was sold to Canine Sports Ltd and a stadium was speedily constructed. The stadium in the Old Trafford area was south of the Chester Road tramway and north of Talbot Road. Opening The first meeting took place on 28 May 1928 followed by speedway on 16 June 1928. The circuit circumference was listed as 448⅔ yards with distances of 500, 525, 700 and 725 yards behind an 'Inside Sumner' hare system. The circuit was described as having wide well banked turns. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). 1929 Speedway English Dirt Track League
The 1929 English Dirt Track League was the inaugural season of speedway in the United Kingdom for Northern English teams. There was also a Southern League called the 1929 Speedway Southern League that started during the same year. Summary The season was littered with mid-season withdrawals but eventually the Leeds were crowned champions. In 1930, the league was renamed the Northern League so the league existed for just one year. White City Speedway (Manchester) withdrew from the league after a dispute and would have been crowned champions if they had not done so because they were leading the table at the time. Billy Dallison
William James Baden Dallison (20 June 1900 – 25 March 1946) was a motorcycle speedway rider who rode in the earliest days of the sport in Britain. Speedway career Dallison, born in Camberwell, rode in the pioneer years of British speedway beginning his British leagues career riding for White City, Manchester during the 1929 Speedway English Dirt Track League season. He helped the team set the pace and lead the league table, winning 18 of their 20 matches but following a dispute, Manchester withdrew from the league handing Leeds the title. He rode for Hall Green Bulldogs during the 1930 Speedway Southern League and would remain one of the sports leading riders until the outbreak of World War II. He later became captain of the Birmingham team. Dallison died suddenly at home, in Birmingham on 25 March 1946. Speedway career Grosskreutz finished third in the Star Riders' Championship in 1935, the forerunner to the Speedway World Championship which began a year later in 1936. He won the Australian Championship at Davies Park Speedway in Brisbane in 1929 and again in 1936 at the famous Sydney Showground. He was also NSW State Champion in 1936 and 1946. He moved to the Belle Vue Aces in 1931. He stayed with the aces until the end of the 1936 season when he retired to manage the Norwich Stars. Leslie William Wotton (26 September 1907 – 9 April 1995) was an international motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned 13 international caps for the England national speedway team. Biography Wotton, born in Bath rode in the pioneer years of British speedway beginning his British leagues career riding for White City, Manchester during the early part of the 1929 Speedway English Dirt Track League season. He helped the team set the pace and lead the league table, winning 18 of their 20 matches but following a dispute, Manchester withdrew from the league handing Leeds the title. He rode the remainder of the season with Liverpool. He stayed with Liverpool for the 1930 Speedway Northern League season before joining Preston for 1931.
