When The Spaniards Were Here
''When the Spaniards Were Here'' (''Da Spanierne var her'') is a romantic, comic play by Hans Christian Andersen. It premiered on the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen on 6 April 1865, just a few days after the celebration of Andersen's 60th birthday. Composition Andersen's first childhood memory involved Spanish soldiers on Funen. The first time they appear in his writings is in the poem ''Soldaten'' (The Soldier) from 1830. The male protagonist of his play ''Skilles og mødes'' was also a Spanish soldier. In 1835. Amdersem wrote a vaudeville totæed ''Spanierne i Odense'' (The Spaniards in Odense) which never premiered. In 1865, he adapted it into the play ''When the Spaniards Were Here'', changing the setting from Odense to Middelfart. Edvard Lehmann (painter)
Edvard Lehmann (1815-1892) was a Danish painter, illustrator and lithographer who is mainly remembered for his work as a theatre painter. His drawings and watercolours are an importance source of knowledge about Danish theatre during the Danish Golden Age. Biography Lehmann was born in Copenhagen on 20 January 1815, the son of miniature painter Johan Peter Christian Lehmann and Johanne Lassen. He never married and left no children. Lehmann studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1828. He worked at the Royal Danish Theatre as a costume draughtsman c. 1840-70, collaborating with August Bournonville. Lehmann was also active as a portraitist and painted humorous genre paintings of street life in Copenhagen. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, he is best remembered for his literary fairy tales. Middelfart is a town in central Denmark, with a population of 16,277 . The town is the municipal seat of Middelfart Municipality on the island of Funen ( da, Fyn). Louise Rudolfine Sahlgreen (; 17 September 1818 15 August 1891) was a Danish operatic soprano. She was engaged by the Royal Danish Theatre in 1836, first as a member of the chorus but from 1842 as an opera singer. As a result of her plain looks, she did not reach prima donna status but nevertheless had a powerful soprano voice which extended to contralto, allowing her to perform a wide variety of roles. Louise Phister
Louise Petrine Amalie Phister, née ''Petersen'', (1816–1914) was a Danish stage actress. Life Phister grew up in poverty; on her father's death, she applied to become a chorister at the Royal Danish Theatre. The theatre, discerning her talent for acting, instead enrolled her to study as an actress, and she became the maid and student of Anna Nielsen in 1829. Phister made her debut in 1835. She took many parts as a soubrette, appearing also in vaudeville, breeches parts and, eventually, in roles depicting old women. She was decorated with the medal in service for actors, Fortjenstmedaljen, in gold in 1885, and broke a record when she retired in 1895 after sixty seasons on the stage.
