"When I Hear Music" is a freestyle song produced by "Pretty" Tony Butler and sung and performed by Debbie Deb. Production Background "Pretty" Tony Butler learned music by studying electronics and fixing stereos and televisions an DJing. Butler recollected in 1985 that his parents "kept me enrolled in electronics classes, didn't let me out of the house when the guys wanted to go out. I was a nerd." He was in high school when he started DJing playing music at a large skating rink called the Superstar Rollerteque with music like Planet Patrol, Kraftwerk and Soulsonic Force. Butler explained that Atlantic Records had been sending him records to test with audiences before they were officially released and Butler was able to predict which ones with a would become hits with great accuracy. Debbie Deb
Deborah Claire Wesoff-Kowalski (born March 10, 1966), known professionally as Debbie Deb, is an American singer and songwriter best known for her 1980s freestyle music, freestyle dance singles "Lookout Weekend" and "When I Hear Music". Biography Deb was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in North Miami Beach, Florida. A music aficionado from a young age, she was "discovered" at the age of 16 by producer Pretty Tony (Anthony Ray Butler) at a Miami record store where she was working. While Debbie had no formal training, she had been singing most of her life. Pretty Tony told her that he liked the way she spoke and asked if she could sing, to which she answered "yes". They recorded "When I Hear Music," which she co-wrote with Pretty Tony in his studio the very next day. Released on the Jam Packed record label in 1984, the song has since become a staple in clubs and on dance and urban radio stations and mixshows. The ''Spin Alternative Record Guide'' is a music reference book compiled by the American music magazine '' Spin'' and published in 1995 by Vintage Books. It was edited by rock critic Eric Weisbard and Craig Marks, who was the magazine's editor-in-chief at the time. The book features essays and reviews from a number of prominent critics on albums, artists, and genres considered relevant to the alternative music movement. Contributors who were consulted for the guide include Ann Powers, Rob Sheffield, Simon Reynolds, and Michael Azerrad. The book did not sell particularly well and received a mixed reaction from reviewers in 1995. The quality and relevance of the contributors' writing were praised, while the editors' concept and comprehensiveness of alternative music were seen as ill-defined.
