Wheelchair Basketball
Wheelchair basketball is basketball played by people with varying physical disabilities that disqualify them from playing a non-disabled sport. These include spina bifida, birth defects, cerebral palsy, paralysis due to accident, amputations (of the legs, or other parts), and many other disabilities. The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) is the governing body for this sport. It is recognized by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) as the sole competent authority in wheelchair basketball worldwide. FIBA has recognized IWBF under Article 53 of its General Statutes. The IWBF has 95 National Organizations for Wheelchair Basketball (NOWBs) participating in wheelchair basketball throughout the world, with this number increasing each year. Helen Freeman (born 23 November 1989) is a 4.0 point British wheelchair basketball player who represented Great Britain in five European championships, and at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London and the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. Biography Helen Freeman was born in Watford on 23 November 1989. A 4.0 point player, she began playing wheelchair basketball with Aspire Force when she was 12. She played with the national team at the European Championships in Wetzlar, Germany, in 2007, winning bronze. Christina Schwab (née Ripp) (born July 31, 1980) is an American Paralympic Games, Paralympic basketball player and distance track/road racer. Competition Schwab started competing for Paralympic Games in 2000 where she got into the 5th place at the 2000 Summer Paralympics. Four years later she won a gold medal in Athens, Greece for wheelchair basketball competition and in 2008 she won her second gold in Beijing, China. She was also awarded gold at International Wheelchair Basketball Federation Gold Cup and won bronze medal in track and field trials. Rose Hollermann (born December 25, 1995) is an American 3.5 point wheelchair basketball player who won gold at the 2011, and 2019 Women's U25 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship, the 2011, 2015 and 2023 Parapan American Games, and the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Rebecca Murray (born March 15, 1990) is an American former wheelchair basketball player. She is a three-time Parapan American Games gold medalist in both 2007, 2011 and 2023. Katie Harnock ( ; born August 12, 1983) is a Canadian 2.0 point Paralympic wheelchair basketball player. Biography Katie Harnock was born in Kitchener, Ontario, on August 12, 1983. She attended St. David Catholic Secondary School. She commenced playing wheelchair basketball in 1993, when she was just 10 years old, after she received a local club's brochure in the mail. Annabel Breuer (born 23 October 1992) is a wheelchair fencer and 1.5 point wheelchair basketball player. She has played for SKV Ravensburg and Sabres Ulm in the German wheelchair basketball league.
