England National Wheelchair Rugby League Team
The England national wheelchair rugby league team represents England in wheelchair rugby league. The team have played in all four World Cup tournaments, winning both the inaugural competition in 2008 and the 2021 edition on home soil, and being runners up in both 2013 and 2017. They also won the 2015 European Wheelchair Rugby League Championship. The team was established in 2007 under the auspices of the British Wheelchair Tag Rugby League Association and played its first test match, against France the same year. The team are sponsored by Betfred in a two-year deal signed in 2022 that included the wheelchair, men's and women's teams. They train at Calderdale College in Halifax. Wheelchair Rugby League
Wheelchair rugby league is a wheelchair-based version of rugby league football, one of two recognised disability versions of the sport. It was developed by French rugby league player, coach and official, Wally Salvan in 2004. Unlike other wheelchair sports, people without disabilities are allowed to compete in top-level competition. The sport is also unique in the fact that men and women of any age can play against each other in top-level competition. 2021 Rugby League World Cup
The 2021 Rugby League World Cup (RLWC2021) was a collection of world cups in the sport of rugby league, held in England from 15 October to 19 November 2022. England won hosting rights for the competition on 27 October 2016. The bid received £25 million UK government support, partnered with the UK Cabinet Office as part of a commitment to the Northern Powerhouse, with 87 percent of all matches to be held in Northern England, northern towns and cities. European Rugby League
The European Rugby League (ERL) is the umbrella body for nations playing the sport of rugby league football across Europe. In the absence of other continental federations, ERL also controls rugby league in North America (including Central America), the Middle East and Africa. History 2003-2019 The federation was founded January 2003 following an initiative between Richard Lewis, Executive Chairman of Britain's Rugby Football League (RFL) and his French counterpart Jean Paul Ferre. The Rugby League European Championship (formerly known as the European Cup and European Nations Cup) is a rugby league football tournament for European national teams that was first held in 1935. Originally, the European Cup had three teams, with England, Wales and France each playing each other once. Women's Rugby League European Championship
The Women's Rugby League European Championship is an international rugby league football tournament for European national teams first held in 2022. History The creation of Women's Rugby League European Championships was announced by the ERL in May 2022 with the inaugural edition taking place between June and October the same year, 87 years after the creation of the men's version of the tournament. The tournament would consist of an A and B league with promotion and relegation between them, as the men's tournament has done since 2020. The inaugural edition however, did not feature an A league as A tier countries were competing is the 2021 Women's Rugby League World Cup delayed to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2022 B league was divided into to two groups, a North and South group, which were won by Wales and Greece respectively.
