The Westmoreland County Transit Authority (WCTA) is the operator of mass transportation in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Using 35 buses, a total of 18 routes are operated, the majority of which serve the urbanized corridor that makes up the western portion of the county. Bus routes in this area are designed to provide access for suburban commuters to Downtown Pittsburgh, as well as transportation for both workers and shoppers to the large suburbs of Greensburg and New Kensington, Pennsylvania the most prominent entities in the county's boundaries. Rural eastern bus routes allow for commutes to Greensburg and also provide service to the city of Johnstown in neighboring Cambria County. Mount Pleasant is a Borough (Pennsylvania), borough in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. It stands 45 miles (72 km) southeast of Pittsburgh. Penn State New Kensington is a commonwealth campus of the Pennsylvania State University located in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. The campus has an enrollment of 545 undergraduate students and offers twelve bachelor's degree programs and five associate degree programs as well as four men's and four women's sports. Arnold, Pennsylvania
Arnold is a city in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States, within the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The population was 5,157 at the 2010 Census. History Present-day Westmoreland County was part of the hunting reserves of the Iroquois Indians. White colonists began to penetrate the area in the 1750s, and circa 1781 Robert McCrea purchased the land on which Arnold is situated. New Kensington
New Kensington, known locally as New Ken, is a city in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. It is situated along the Allegheny River, northeast of Pittsburgh. The population was 12,170 at the 2010 census. History Like much of Westmoreland County and surrounding areas, the region was a hunting ground for Native Americans of the Six Nations. Westmoreland County Community College is a public community college in Youngwood, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1970 during an era of community college proliferation within the state. Its location on the suburban fringe was designed to attract students from both the Westmoreland County suburbs of Pittsburgh and the Monongahela Valley, then a still booming industrial center. Youngwood is a borough in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. History The community was established in 1899 and was built on land owned by John Y. Woods, a farmer. In creating the name Youngwood, John Y. Woods took his own family name and combined it with his maternal grandfather's name, which was Young. Youngwood owes its existence to the Southwest Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad, which ran from Greensburg south to Uniontown and Fairchance. In 1900, a large classification yard was built for sorting railroad cars, and this railroad yard provided Youngwood's economic base for many decades. Youngwood became a borough on November 10, 1902. South Greensburg
South Greensburg is a borough in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,117 at the 2010 census. History Early history In 1780, Michael Rugh acquired title to , which he operated as a farm. The land was passed on to his son, Jacob Rugh, and later to Jacob's son, Peter Rugh. The Rugh family house is still extant at 1213 Broad Street. The current building dates from the Civil War, but was built on the foundation of a much older structure. The area was known as Rughtown, although it was not yet a town in any meaningful sense. In the 1870s, a local industrialist, George Franklin Huff, bought of the Rugh farm.
