Westinghouse Signals
Westinghouse Rail Systems Ltd (formerly ''Westinghouse Signals Ltd'') was a British supplier of railway signalling and control equipment to the rail industry worldwide. Its head office was in Chippenham, Wiltshire, where it manufactured a variety of mechanical and electrical/electronic railway signalling equipment. It had six other UK offices in Croydon, York, Birmingham, Crawley, Swanley and Glasgow. It also had a number of overseas offices, particularly in the Far East, including Melbourne. Westinghouse was the largest signalling design and control engineering company within the UK. Its largest contract was awarded in 2004: a ten-year £850m re-signalling of eight London Underground lines for the Metronet Public-Private Partnership. Swanley
Swanley is a town and civil parish in the Sevenoaks District of Kent, England, southeast of central London, adjacent to the Greater London boundary and within the M25 motorway periphery. The population at the 2011 census was 16,226. History In 1066, Swanley only consisted of a few cattle farms, surrounded in oak, sycamore and ash (Fraxinus) woodland. Because Swanley only consisted of a few homesteads, it was not mentioned in the Domesday Book. There is a theory that the placename Swanley developed from the Saxon term 'Swine-ley', "Ley" meaning a clearing in the woods and "swine" meaning pigs. Westlock Interlocking
WESTLOCK Interlocking is a Computer-based Interlocking (CBI) product now sold and maintained by Siemens Mobility Limited, following their purchase of Westinghouse Rail Systems. Westlock builds on many of the features that made SSI popular in the United Kingdom. This includes re-use of SSI's programming language and its track-side hardware. In addition to backwards compatibility with SSI, Westlock provides additional capacity. This is currently estimated to be around four times that of an SSI, giving it the capability to control over 300 Signalling Equivalent Units (SEUs). Leamington Spa was the test site for Westlock, and was its first operational site. It was also SSI's test site more than 20 years earlier. Solid State Interlocking
Solid is one of the four fundamental states of matter (the others being liquid, gas, and plasma). The molecules in a solid are closely packed together and contain the least amount of kinetic energy. A solid is characterized by structural rigidity and resistance to a force applied to the surface. Unlike a liquid, a solid object does not flow to take on the shape of its container, nor does it expand to fill the entire available volume like a gas. The atoms in a solid are bound to each other, either in a regular geometric lattice ( crystalline solids, which include metals and ordinary ice), or irregularly (an amorphous solid such as common window glass). Metronet (British Infrastructure Company)
Metronet Rail was one of two infrastructure companies (the other being Tube Lines, Tube Lines Ltd) in a public-private partnership (PPP) with London Underground. A consortium of private companies, Metronet was responsible for the maintenance, renewal, and upgrade of the infrastructure (track, trains, tunnels, signals, and stations) on nine London Underground lines from 2003 to 2008. Following financial difficulties, the company was placed in Administration (law), administration in July 2007. In May 2008, the company's responsibilities were transferred back into public ownership under the authority of Transport for London (TfL).
