Western River, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Western River is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the north coast of Kangaroo Island overlooking Investigator Strait about south-west of the state capital of Adelaide and about west of the municipal seat of Kingscote. Its boundaries were created in March 2002 for the “long established name” which was derived from the river located within its boundaries. In 2011, a portion of the adjoining locality of Middle River was excised and added to Western River. A school operated within what is now the locality here between 1901 and 1903. Western River occupies land bounded by Investigator Strait to the north. Land use is divided between conservation and agriculture with the former applying to the coastline in order to “enhance and conserve the natural features of the coast” and to the protected area known as the Western River Wilderness Protection Area while the latter applies to land in the locality's southern half. Western River Wilderness Protection Area, formerly the Western River Conservation Park and the Western River National Park, is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located on the north coast of Kangaroo Island about west of Parndana in the gazetted locality of Western River. Waterfall Creek, with its scenic Billy Goat Waterfall, are within the area. Description The wilderness protection area has an area of . The topography is rugged, with numerous steep slopes and deep gullies. The vegetation consists mainly of open forest, woodland and scrub associations dominated by ''Eucalyptus cladocalyx'', '' E. baxteri'', '' E. diversifolia'' and '' E. cosmophylla''. There are also areas of ''Allocasuarina muelleriana'' open heath and '' A. verticillata'' low open forest. It contains nesting and feeding habitat for Glossy Black Cockatoos. The Western River Expedition (WRE) was a Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, Disney theme park Amusement park attraction, attraction that was designed but never built. It was to be a western themed boat ride, slated to appear in the northwestern section of Frontierland at the Magic Kingdom, a theme park at the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, United States.
