Western River, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Western River is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the north coast of Kangaroo Island overlooking Investigator Strait about south-west of the state capital of Adelaide and about west of the municipal seat of Kingscote. Its boundaries were created in March 2002 for the “long established name” which was derived from the river located within its boundaries. In 2011, a portion of the adjoining locality of Middle River was excised and added to Western River. A school operated within what is now the locality here between 1901 and 1903. Western River occupies land bounded by Investigator Strait to the north. Land use is divided between conservation and agriculture with the former applying to the coastline in order to “enhance and conserve the natural features of the coast” and to the protected area known as the Western River Wilderness Protection Area while the latter applies to land in the locality's southern half. Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island (, ) is Australia's third-largest island, after Tasmania and Melville Island, Northern Territory, Melville Island. It lies in the state of South Australia, southwest of Adelaide. Its closest point to the mainland is Snapper Point in Backstairs Passage, which is from the Fleurieu Peninsula. Western River Wilderness Protection Area, formerly the Western River Conservation Park and the Western River National Park, is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located on the north coast of Kangaroo Island about west of Parndana in the gazetted locality of Western River. Nature conservation is the ethic/moral philosophy and conservation movement focused on protecting species from extinction, maintaining and restoring habitats, enhancing ecosystem services, and protecting biological diversity. The locality includes a part of the Hundred of Gosse which was proposed as the site of a soldier settlement town during the 1950s. Investigator Strait
Investigator Strait is a body of water in South Australia lying between the Yorke Peninsula, on the Australian mainland, and Kangaroo Island. It was named by Matthew Flinders after his ship, HMS ''Investigator'', on his voyage of 1801–1802. It is bordered by the Gulf St Vincent in the northeast.
