Western River, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Western River is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the north coast of Kangaroo Island overlooking Investigator Strait about south-west of the state capital of Adelaide and about west of the municipal seat of Kingscote. Its boundaries were created in March 2002 for the “long established name” which was derived from the river located within its boundaries. In 2011, a portion of the adjoining locality of Middle River was excised and added to Western River. A school operated within what is now the locality here between 1901 and 1903. Western River occupies land bounded by Investigator Strait to the north. Land use is divided between conservation and agriculture with the former applying to the coastline in order to “enhance and conserve the natural features of the coast” and to the protected area known as the Western River Wilderness Protection Area while the latter applies to land in the locality's southern half. Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island, also known as Karta Pintingga (literally 'Island of the Dead' in the language of the Kaurna people), is Australia's third-largest island, after Tasmania and Melville Island. __NOTOC__ Gosse is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on Kangaroo Island about south-west of the state capital of Adelaide city centre. The locality includes a part of the Hundred of Gosse which was proposed as the site of a soldier settlement town during the 1950s. A site was surveyed in June 1961 and gazetted as a government town in September 1961 with the name Gosse which is derived from Sir James Hay Gosse who had an interest in native fauna and flora conservation on Kangaroo Island and whose father, William Gosse, is remembered in the naming of the Hundred of Gosse. Mawson is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. It covers the entirety of Kangaroo Island, and parts of the local government areas of Alexandrina Council, the City of Onkaparinga, and the District Council of Yankalilla. Western River Wilderness Protection Area, formerly the Western River Conservation Park and the Western River National Park, is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located on the north coast of Kangaroo Island about west of Parndana in the gazetted locality of Western River. Agriculture or farming is the practice of cultivating plants and livestock. Agriculture was the key development in the rise of sedentary human civilization, whereby farming of domesticated species created food surpluses that enabled people to live in cities. Nature conservation is the moral philosophy and conservation movement focused on protecting species from extinction, maintaining and restoring habitats, enhancing ecosystem services, and protecting biological diversity.
