Western Derby
The Western Derby () is the name given to the Australian rules football match between the West Coast Eagles and the Fremantle Dockers, who both participate in the Australian Football League (AFL). As both teams are based in Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, the term "local derby, derby" is used to describe the match. It has become one of the most important matches for football in Western Australia, with former and West Coast player, and former West Coast coach John Worsfold claiming that in the week before a derby that it is the main topic in Perth. In 2004, during the 175th-anniversary celebrations of the establishment of the Swan River Colony, the Western Derby was named as one of 12 "Heritage Icons", in recognition of "football's key social and historical importance to the State". Nine Network
The Nine Network (stylised 9Network, commonly known as Channel Nine or simply Nine) is an Australian commercial free-to-air television network. Phil Matera
Phillip Matera (born 27 November 1975) is a former Australian rules footballer. Career Beginning his career in 1996, the 171 cm forward pocket was one of the Australian Football League's best small forwards. Matera is the brother of former AFL players Peter and Wally, the third of the Matera brothers to player for West Coast. He won the club's goalkicking for the second time in 2002 and his speed and ability to apply pressure often created scoring chances. He hit back strongly after a midseason form slump. In 2003 he was in good form and won All-Australian selection for the first time after kicking 62 goals. In 2004 he just missed out on All-Australian selection after kicking 61 goals, as the selectors opted to play an extra midfielder. Andrew Embley
Andrew Embley (born 27 June 1981) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). He is known for winning the Norm Smith Medal as the best player in the 2006 AFL Grand Final. Embley was born in Perth and began his career with in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). He was recruited by West Coast with the 57th pick in the 1998 National Draft. Embley made his debut in the first match of the 1999 season, and was an AFL Rising Star nominee the following year. In 2004, he represented Australia in the International Rules Series. Embley was one of West Coast's vice-captains between 2004 and 2006, and played a key part in West Coast's victory over in the 2006 AFL Grand Final. Phillip Read
Phil Read (born 20 October 1979) is a former Australian rules footballer for the Australian Football League, AFL's West Coast Eagles and Melbourne Football Club. Read was educated at Wesley College, Perth. West Coast Eagles Drafted by the Eagles, Read kicked 12 goals in 21 games in his rookie season. During the "Western Derby, Demolition Derby" in Round 21, 2000, Read was struck numerous times during an attempted fight with Fremantle Football Club, Fremantle's Dale Kickett. This started a melee involving a number of players which led to Kickett being suspended for a total of 9 weeks and Read for two with a hefty fine for multiple wrestling offences. Matthew Pavlich
Matthew Pavlich (born 31 December 1981) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Fremantle Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). A versatile player, Pavlich is widely regarded as one of the premier AFL centre half-forwards of the modern era, achieving All-Australian selection six times between 2002 and 2008, twice representing Australia in the International Rules Series and representing the Dream Team in the 2008 AFL Hall of Fame Tribute Match. Scott Cummings (born 18 January 1974) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for , , the West Coast Eagles, and in the Australian Football League. Cummings played primarily as a full forward and won the Coleman Medal in 1999 AFL season, 1999 for being the leading goalscorer for the season. Benjamin Thomas Allan (born 15 October 1968) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Hawthorn Football Club and Fremantle Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL), and for the Claremont Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). In a short but decorated playing career, Allan was appointed the inaugural captain of Fremantle, and is one of only two footballers to have won three consecutive Simpson Medals, the other being Barry Cable. Ross William Glendinning (born 17 September 1956) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the East Perth Football Club in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL) and for the North Melbourne Football Club and the West Coast Eagles in the Victorian Football League (VFL). The Glendinning–Allan Medal, formerly the Ross Glenndinning Medal, is awarded to the player judged best on ground in each Western Derby Australian rules football, football match played between Fremantle Football Club and the West Coast Eagles.
