Westeinde is a hamlet in the municipality of Enkhuizen in the Dutch province of North Holland. North Holland
North Holland ( nl, Noord-Holland, ) is a province of the Netherlands in the northwestern part of the country. It is located on the North Sea, north of South Holland and Utrecht, and west of Friesland and Flevoland. In November 2019, it had a population of 2,877,909 and a total area of , of which is water. From the 9th to the 16th century, the area was an integral part of the County of Holland. During this period West Friesland was incorporated. Enkhuizen
Enkhuizen () is a municipality and a city in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland and the region of West-Frisia. History Enkhuizen, like Hoorn and Amsterdam, was one of the harbor-towns of the VOC, from where overseas trade with the East Indies was conducted. It received city rights in 1355. On June 24, 1572 during the Eighty Years' War, in Enkhuizen five Franciscans from Alkmaar were hanged: known as the martyrs of Alkmaar. In the mid-17th century, Enkhuizen was at the peak of its power and was one of the most important harbor cities in the Netherlands. However, due to a variety of reasons, notably the silting up of the harbors, Enkhuizen lost its position to Amsterdam. Tourism Enkhuizen has one of the largest marinas in the Netherlands. Bovenkarspel
Bovenkarspel is a town in the municipality of Stede Broec in the Dutch province of North Holland. Until 1979, it was a separate municipality. Koepoort
The Koepoort or Westerpoort is a city gate in Enkhuizen. The gate used to be the main western entrance of Enkhuizen and is a part of the old fortifications of the city. Description Between 1590 and 1593 Enkhuizen was extended toward the west. A new city wall was built with a moat and seven bastions. At the Koepoort's current location, a wooden gate and a drawbridge were built. Half a century later plans were made for a stone gate building. The Koepoort's architect is probably Jacob van Campen. In 1649 the foundation stone was installed, but it soon turned out that there was no sufficient supply of the Bentheimer sandstone that was used in the design. The gate was finished provisionally in 1654. Traffic was guided through the gate.
